I love making crochet flowers. I really don’t know why I don’t make more of them! I had some Caron Cotton Cakes lying around after making the Hydrangea Baby Blanket and I wanted to make some small projects out of them so I started experimenting with flowers. This post will show you all about how to crochet a carnation.
These are so easy!! If you follow this pattern exactly you get a small flower, but it is easy to customize. As long as you chain an even number of stitches the pattern should turn out perfectly for whatever size your heart desires.
I experimented with a few of these. I put a couple on my blanket, made some into hair clips (just use a hot glue gun!) and plan on putting some on headbands and embellishing some clothes I have.
When you need a quick and easy flower pattern, this is the one! It’s also part of a fun fall project that will be coming your way soon.
Small Carnation
What You’ll Need
Yarn: Any yarn will work for this. I used Caron Cotton Cakes for the ones pictured here. The video shows Cumulus Dappled from Juniper Moon Farms.
Hook: Any appropriate sized hook for your yarn. I used a size H (5.0mm) hook for the Caron Cotton Cakes and a size J (6.0mm) hook for the Cumulus Dappled. If you aren’t sure, just check the ball band of the yarn you are using. There should be a recommended hook size.
Notions: Yarn needle.
Finished Size: Mine turned out approximately 2.5″ wide with these worsted weight yarns.
Pattern
Ch 32.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * to end; turn – 31 sts.

Fasten off. Roll into flower shape and stitch together on back side.

That’s it! This is such a simple pattern. What would you use these for?
I hope I see a lot of crochet flowers out there! Be sure to check out my other free crochet patterns!
Happy Crocheting!

Thank you so much! I have not taken time to experiment with making my own flowers yet, and really appreciate all the time and effort you and others put into design!
I think this will be perfect for a young girls bucket hat I just made. 😀
