Tips for Perfect Crochet Tops
- Gauge is important when it comes to something that a person is going to wear! So, if you’ve been unsure about making a crochet top because you are afraid of a gauge swatch, don’t be! Just make up a small square (at least 4″ x 4″) in the same stitch pattern and count your stitches and rows to ensure your garment will come out in the size you expect. You don’t want to put all that work into it only to have it be the wrong size.
- Keep your yarn choice appropriate for the season you are making it to be worn in. I picked wool for a summer sweater, and, boy, did I regret that choice… a nice cotton or blend would have worked much better.
What are the best yarns for crochet tops?
There is really no right or wrong here (except the seasonality, as I mentioned before!), but there are several things to look at that can greatly affect your result.
First, check the care label on the yarn. Is it hand wash only? Will you (or the recipient) actually hand wash a sweater? Would it be better to use a machine washable yarn?
Second, do a test or two to see if the yarn has a tendency to pill or to bleed color onto other fabrics. Make a swatch (you’re doing this anyway to get gauge… right?), fold the swatch in half and rub it together. Do the fibers catch? Does it start to pill?
For the colorfastness test, take the swatch and place it in water to really get it wet. Then, rub it against some white fabric. Does the color bleed onto the white fabric at all? If so, this might happen with wear or in the wash.
