Common Questions about Pocket Shawls
This really depends on the yardage in your skein, but on average you will need 4-5 skeins (3.5oz) of yarn for a crochet pocket shawl. This is between 1000-1500 yards of yarn for an adult pocket shawl. The Simple Pocket Shawl uses 4 skeins of Lion Brand Heartland, for a total of around 1000 yards.
This varies depending upon the person it is made for, but a typical width is 60-65 inches. It is very easy to adjust the length of a pocket shawl by crocheting more or fewer rows. You want the shawl to be the length from fingertip to fingertip, so keep the wearer’s size in mind when making a pocket shawl.
Pocket shawls require no shaping, so these are great for beginners!! Most pocket shawls use simple stitches, such as single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet, which makes them a great choice for beginners who would like to wear what they make.
You can really make a crochet pocket shawl in any weight yarn you like. This pattern is made with worsted weight yarn (#4), but I have seen them in bulky weight yarn (#5) and even in Bernat Blanket!
The main difference is in the width. A pocket scarf is usually not nearly as wide as a shawl or wrap. A pocket wrap is really the same thing as a pocket shawl, just a different name.
Design Story and Inspiration for this Easy Pocket Shawl
I’ve been seeing these shawls all over the place, and I really love how they look like a cardigan from the front but require no shaping. They are interesting yet simple enough for a beginner and I really wanted to try one out.
I picked a border of moss stitch and the body of single crochet mesh to keep it simple. You only need to know how to single crochet and chain to create this shawl! If you need help, be sure to see the video tutorial.

About the Yarn
When I saw this amazing shade of Lion Brand Heartland at my local JoAnn, I bought all 6 skeins they had.
I have used Heartland several times (such as in my son’s V-neck sweater) and I know it makes wonderful garments. I wasn’t sure at the time what I was going to make this those skeins, but I envisioned something for myself that I could wear.
I love how it turned out!! The combination of these simple stitches with this yarn is a match made in heaven.
If you would like to substitute yarn for this project, any worsted weight yarn that gets gauge will work.

Crochet Shawl Pattern Details
This project is made with only single crochet and chains, and there is no shaping, making it an easy project.
I kept mine in the car and worked on it anytime I wasn’t driving. (My hubs drives when we are together and I wait in the car line for the kiddos every morning, so I always like to have a project in the car!) This worked up quickly and easily.
Please see the video tutorial if you have any questions or problems!
How to Customize your Crochet Pocket Shawl
You can easily change the width of this pattern by working more or fewer rows of the crochet mesh.
You can omit the ribbing and buttons on the pockets or work the pockets in a completely different stitch. Even a granny square or two would look great!
Finally, you could add fringe or another border to the edges. It’s totally up to you!

Top Border
For this section, you will work 2 sts in each ch-3 space. You have two choices for this. You can single crochet across the mesh, working 2 sc in each ch-3 space and a sc in each sc, or you can work the (sc, ch 1) stitch pattern, ensuring that there are 2 sts for each ch-3 space and one st for each sc. You should end the first row with 70 sts.
Then, simply work row 2 for three more rows to finish off this side and make it even with the bottom.
Fasten off.
Pocket (Make 2)
Ch 57.
Work row 1 of shawl. (56 sts).
Repeat row 2 of shawl until piece measures 5″ from beginning.

Row 2: Slip st in ch-1 space of pocket, turn, sc back loop only in each st; turn (4 sts). (Be careful NOT to count the slip stitch and work into it – you should always have 4 sts).
Row 3: Ch 1, sc back loop only in first 3 sts, sc2tog last stitch (back loop only) and next sc of pocket.
Repeat rows 2-3 until you are halfway across the pocket, then work buttonhole. Make sure you end with a row 2 so that you are at the top of the pocket.
Buttonhole row: Ch 4, skip all stitches of the ribbing, sc in next sc of pocket.
Continue working rows 2-3 to end of pocket. Fasten off.
Finishing
Stitch pockets to each end of shawl using a whip stitch or running stitch.
Stitch on buttons directly behind buttonholes.
Weave in ends.

Carol Robinson
I think I must be overlooking something in the pattern for the Simple Pocket Shawl. The first row reads ch 71. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *skip next ch, sc in next; repeat to last ch, sc in last ch; turn. (70 sts).
If we’re skipping every other chain, then we would only have 35 stitches and it would be puckered up. Shouldn’t there be a chain 1 for every skipped stitch to keep it flat?
amanda
Carol you are right!! There should definitely be a ch 1 in the instructions. I’ll go back and add that now. 🙂 Thank you for letting me know!
