My youngest is really loving stuffed animals. The other boys didn’t really care for them much, but this one is an animal lover for sure.
I decided that I need to make him some new cute and cuddly critters, so I set out to design something we didn’t have already in our small collection. We needed a whale! And I happened to have this amazing blue pipsqueak yarn that is perfect for making animals, so this project was a no-brainer.
You can make this little guy in about an hour. It works up SO fast! You start at the nose, then work your way down the body. After adding the fiberfill, you just close up the tail area by single crocheting through both layers of the fabric, make the tail and fins, then sew the fins on and embroider a face. Super simple!
I’m going to be making him some more animals from time to time. I’m trying to make sure there is a variety of project types on the blog and I’m making my kiddo happy at the same time. Win-win!

Pipsqueak Whale
What You’ll Need
Yarn: Bernat Pipsqueak 1 skein Blue Ice
Hook: US Size K (6.5mm)
Notions: Fiberfill, scrap gray or black yarn (to embroider face – I used Feels Like Butta in Charcoal)
Gauge: Not crucial for this project
Notes: Do not join rounds, they are worked continuously in sc. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to make it easier to distinguish rounds.

Pattern
Ch 2.
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook – 6 sts.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st – 12 sts.
Round 3: *Sc, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around – 18 sts.
Round 4: *Sc 2, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around – 24 sts.
Round 5: *Sc 3, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * around – 30 sts.
Rounds 6-10: Work even in sc.
Round 11: *Sc 3, sc2tog; repeat from * around – 24 sts.
Round 12: Work even in sc.
Round 13: *Sc 2, sc2tog; repeat from * around – 18 sts.
Round 14: Work even in sc.
Round 15: *Sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around – 12 sts.
Rounds 16-18: Work even in sc.
Stuff with fiberfill.
TAIL
Flatten tail area, lining stitches up on top of each other (the 12 sts from round 18 will become 6 sts for tail).
Row 1: Working through both layers, sc 6 sts across to close tail; turn – 6 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc to last st, 2 sc in last st; turn – 8 sts.
Row 3: Ch 2, hdc in first 2 sts, sc, slip st in next 2 sts, sc, hdc 2.
Fasten off.
FIN (Make 2)
Ch 5.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 4 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog twice; turn – 2 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog – 1 st.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Sew fins to body using photos as guide.
Embroider eyes, mouth and blow hole (if desired). I thought he looked like he needed a blow hole to distinguish that he was a whale. 🙂
Weave in all ends.
That’s it! This is such an easy pattern that can be whipped up in just about an hour or so, depending upon how comfortable you are working in the round. With this yarn, I have to “feel” for my stitches since it’s hard to see them, but I’ve never had any trouble working with it.
