I could see the excitement in her eyes as she carefully opened the package and spotted her favorite coffee. Then her eyes fell on the mug I had carefully picked out and the specially made mug cozies and you could tell she couldn’t contain her glee.
This was a couple of years ago when I first created a mug cozy for my cousin. She got two, actually. A crochet one and a knit one and loved them both.
So, if you are struggling to figure out what to get a coffee lover in your life, and also want to add some kind of handmade element, this pattern is for you!!
Design Story and Inspiration for the Basketweave Knitted Mug Cozy
I knew that I wanted to design another mug cozy for this year’s Holiday Maker’s Challenge, and I wanted it to be something that was easy enough for a beginner (hello simple knit and purl!) but also something that would be beautiful.
I love the basketweave stitch in crochet, so I thought a knitted version would be wonderful. It turned out even better than I had hoped! And it easily fits the mugs we have at home, which is perfect.
About the Yarn
I wanted this project to work up quickly so I knew I wanted a chunky or super bulky yarn. I have a lot of Color Made Easy in my stash (and I’m trying to use that stash up before the new year!) so I decided it was a match made in heaven.
You’ve seen me use Color Made Easy several times (including for the Easiest Ever Knit Hat Pattern also in the Holiday Challenge) because I love it so much.
It’s easy to care for (oops, spilled coffee on it? No problem, it’s machine washable and dryable), it feels great, and it comes in a huge array of colors, so you’re bound to find one you love.

Pattern Details
The pattern for the Basketweave Knitted Mug Cozy is super simple. It’s just a combination of knit and purls with two stitches on each side as a garter stitch border.
You will work this pattern flat and work two tiny seams at the end using any seaming method you wish.
This pattern is worked from the bottom up, so if you need to adjust the size you will have to adjust the stitch count. This stitch pattern is in multiples of 6, so if you need it smaller adjust down by 6 or 12, and if you need larger adjust up by the same number.
