Lion Brand Scarfie yarn is a wonderful yarn for both knitting and crochet. It is an acrylic wool blend that has enough yardage to make a full length scarf or cowl with one ball – hence the name!

You can make stylish garments with a beautiful unique self-striping ombré effect. The gradual color changes also make it wonderful for afghans, baby blankets, shawls, and accessories. It even makes a wonderful pom pom.

Scarfie Yarn Review (Personal Experience)

This is really an unparalleled yarn with a unique color self-striping ombré pattern. The sophisticated palette of colors really stands out among yarns.

I’ve personally used Scarfie yarn in several designs and have never been disappointed with any of the hues I’ve used. I have not found knots in my skeins and really love the yardage you get for one skein projects.

Even though it has a wool component, I like the soft hand of the Scarfie yarn.

Pros/Cons

Pros

Wonderful variety of colors to choose from

Unique tonal blend/ombre pattern in each skein

Generous yardage that will allow to you make a full length scarf with one skein

Bulky weight works up quickly

Cons

Contains wool, which some people are allergic to

Recommended to hand wash, which can be a pain

Variations in striping effect can be difficult if making a project with more than one skein

Sometimes the strands are a spun a bit unevenly

Can be hard to frog

Quality

Overall the quality of this yarn is supurb like most Lion Brand Yarns. However, when using this yarn you will find some areas of the strand that are thicker than others.

While I did not find knots, I did find a couple of areas where the yarn was super thick and fuzzy. These were not areas I could just work into my project and not notice, so I had to cut these areas out. However, this did not happen often and is just part of the spinning process.

Lion Brand has excellent customer service if you find a skein that has an unusual amount of these imperfections.

Colors Available

As of the time of this writing, there are 24 colors of Lion Brand Scarfie available on their website. The colors used in this review are Pink/Silver and Mint/Silver.

Other colors I have used personally are Cream/Silver, Cranberry/Black, Cream/Taupe, Charcoal/Aqua, and Cream/Teal.

Average Retail Price + Price per Yard

This yarn is listed on the Lion Brand website for $11.99 a skein, which is comparable to JoAnn and online stores. For the yardage you get, this is a pretty good deal.

Price comes to just under $0.04 per yard.

What It’s Like to Knit & Crochet with Scarfie Yarn

I have found both knitting and crocheting to be quite enjoyable with Scarfie yarn.

The texture of the yarn is a bit fuzzy, with the wool hairs sticking out a little ways away from the strand. Yes, this yarn will shed on you a bit when you work with it, but it’s not terrible.

I really love the feel of Scarfie yarn. It’s not a super soft yarn as the wool fibers give it a bit of roughness, but it is soft enough that it is a joy to work with and wear.

The only thing, as I mentioned above, is that it is difficult to frog with this yarn, mainly with crochet. When I have frogged a knit of this stitch, I didn’t have the same problem of the fibers tangling with each other in a row. I’m guessing this is due to where you choose to place your hook.

I would NOT call this a super squishy yarn.

Where it’s available

You can easily find this yarn both in stores and online.

Blocking

For this yarn, I chose to block using the damp method, where you pin the project to a flat surface and spray down the fibers. Since this is a wool blend yarn it blocked very well.

Wearing and Durability

I have worn the hats I made many times and have found that it really does a good job keeping me warm. I’ve also used my blanket as a lap throw in my studio and it’s amazing at holding in warmth.

The yarn feels warm against your skin, but as I mentioned before it’s not super squishy or soft. I’ve never had a problem with the wool fibers making my forehead itch (which has happened before with other wool yarns).

Scarfie Yarn Substitute

Overall Star Rating

On my 5 point star rating, I’d have to give Lion Brand Scarfie yarn a 4.5. It’s really one of my favorite bulky yarns but it does lose a half star for being hard to frog (it’s kind of lofty and the fibers tend to grab onto each other, which is great unless you want to take the stitches out!) and because of the occasional unevenness of the strands and fuzzes.

Would I use Scarfie again? You bet I would! I’m actually working on the child version of my Diamond Stitch Beanie right now!
