Design Story and Inspiration for This Easy Knit Mug Cozy

I designed this easy little mug cozy for the Holiday Maker’s Challenge – an annual event where we work together to knit as many gifts as possible before Christmas. It comes with a gift giving guide, calendar and 8 FREE downloadable patterns!

All patterns fort his challenge have to meet the following criteria:

  1. Easy enough for an advanced beginner
  2. Quick enough to make in a weekend (for most knitters)
  3. Use up stash yarn
  4. Be well-received by recipients

I feel like this fit the bill! Pair it with a mug and some coffee and you have a wonderful gift for the coffee lover in your life.

Yarn Options for Mug Cozies

I designed this mug cozy with bulky weight yarn (category #5) for extra squish and protection from hot mugs. You can use any yarn you like, from acrylic to cotton, as long as acrylic yarn doesn’t get too close to a heat source (which it shouldn’t as a mug cozy).

Use any bulky weight yarn you like that gets gauge. Time to use up that stash!

Mug Cozy Pattern Details

This pattern is knit flat and seamed. An extra stitch has been added to each side for ease in seaming. These stitches are always worked in Stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl the next row) to aid in working the mattress stitch.

If you seam with the mattress stitch and use the two selvedge stitches, you will find that the result is an unbroken pattern an invisible seam (from the outside, there will be a bit of a seam inside).

Want to work in the round? No problem! Omit the 2 selvedge stitches on each edge and work the pattern as written. This stitch pattern is the same in the round as it is flat (minus the selvedge stitches).
