Have some cake yarn in your stash and don’t know what to do with it? Check out this collection of cake yarn knitting patterns for inspiration!

You might not want to read this post if you are really hungry, because it’s all about cake! Ok, so it’s not the kind of cake that you eat. It’s the yarn kind of cake! That’s right, we’ve got an amazing round-up for you today of cake yarn knitting patterns. You’re going to love it!

Have you seen the cake yarns at the craft store before? They don’t look like the traditional yarn sausages. Instead they are wound into big skeins. If you have your own yarn winder then you are already familiar with the shape of cake yarn. There’s multiple colors of yarn in each cake and they are all expertly matched for crafting bliss. You can’t help but “ooh” and “aah” over all the fun color combinations!

Having multiple colors in a single skein of yarn isn’t exactly a new concept, but it does make my knitting life a lot easier. I don’t have to worry about changing colors or weaving in extra ends. And I can rest easy knowing that the colors I’m using will all look great together in the end. In addition to the benefit of pre-matched colors, you also get the benefit of generous yardage. Typically cake yarns are much larger than average skeins of yarn – sometimes even double!

Those extra yards ensure that you get lovely long stretches of each color. This is another reason that cake yarns are super easy to work with. Larger sections of color simply look better in most cases than the chaotic color changes of patterns worked with variegated yarns. But don’t take my word for it. Scroll down and see all these lovely cake yarn knitting patterns for yourself! Oh, and did I mention that they are all free?!

25 Yummy Cake Yarn Knitting Patterns

1. Step It Up Shawl

Step It Up is a versatile knit shawl design that can be worn in a number of ways. Like all our cake yarn knitting patterns, the self-striping yarn does all the heavy lifting so you can focus on your stitchwork. The design is surprisingly easy since it is done entirely in garter stitch. I love the crescent shape and the unique edging.

Say hello to this gorgeous top down pullover that’s here to stun you with stripes. If you have never knit a garment before, then this cake yarn knitting pattern would be an excellent first project. I prefer working from the top down rather than working from the bottom up because you can try it on as you go to ensure a good fit.

6. Catch Some Waves Blanket

It’s common to see blankets included in lists of cake yarn knitting patterns and it’s no secret why! These knitting projects tend to be more budget-friendly since you don’t need very many skeins (only 3 for this one) and the expertly matched colors are sure to make a big splash. The beautiful Catch Some Waves Blanket is knit in a simple chevron stitch pattern.

8. Big Rib Knit Cowl

Turn the volume up to an 11 with a chunky ribbed statement cowl. The cowl is knit using the moebius technique which gives it a twist. I love the way that mobius cowls drape so effortlessly! 9. Diagonal Scarf

Remember the “super scarf” trend that was sweeping the yarn world a couple years back? I’d put this gorgeous diagonal scarf somewhere in between super sized and regular sized. Personally, I prefer a scarf like this one – with generous width and length for maximum coziness. The best part is that it only takes one cake of yarn!

11. One Piece Cardigan

¾ length sleeves and a cropped hem make this cardigan a super fast knit. (Ok, the super bulky weight of the yarn helps out with speed too!) I also think that these design elements make the piece more versatile and all-year-round wearable. Who knew that cake yarn knitting patterns could be so fashionable?

17. Shaded Chevrons Baby Blanket

Something really cool happens when you use two different colorways of yarn for cake yarn knitting patterns. First of all, you get thinner stripes than usual since you’re switching back and forth between the two colors. Second of all, you get these amazing transitions between shades! The Shaded Chevrons blanket is shown here in the colorways “dreamy rose” and “ballerina”.

20. Stack It Up Afghan

It’s hard to tell the secret of this afghan’s construction at first glance. You see the diagonal lines and you might think that it’s knit on the bias. You see the blocks of color and you might think it’s like a modified log cabin. But the Stack It Up Afghan is actually made with mitered garter stitch squares that are joined as you go!

24. Large Japanese Knot Bag

Have you seen this style of bag before? I just think they are so cute and they’re perfect for a beach bag, a book bag, or really for whatever you need a bag for. Plus, they’re super easy to make using basic knit stitches. I also really like the colors they used for this cake yarn knitting pattern, don’t you?

25. Earflap Hat

You might notice that this is the only hat on our list of cake yarn knitting patterns. That’s because the long color changes aren’t well suited to smaller projects. Usually you only get to 2 or 3 colors of the cake and then you’re done. Not so with the surprisingly short color changes of the Plymouth Yarn Mega Cakes. Good to know!
