Every time I knit a pair of adult socks, I end up with just enough leftover yarn to make a baby pair too. It happens without fail, and I love that these little scraps don’t go to waste. I wanted a pattern that used only knit and purl stitches (no fancy techniques, no cable needle) but still had a ton of texture and personality. That simple k1, p1 pattern stitch does exactly that.

So these cute little socks were born! They come in four sizes, 0-3m, 3-6m, 12m, and 18m, so you can knit them for a newborn or size up for a toddler taking their first steps. Whether you’re using up sock yarn scraps or starting fresh, this is the kind of quick, satisfying knit that makes you want to cast on another pair the second you finish.

Yarn Options for Baby Socks

This pattern uses Malabrigo Ultimate Sock, a superwash merino and nylon blend that’s soft enough for baby skin but still has the durability sock yarn needs. The nylon content, usually 20-25%, dramatically increases durability, which is why almost all sock yarn contains it. That blend gives you the best of both worlds. Wool that’s warm and stretchy, plus a synthetic fiber that holds up to a crawling, cruising, tiny-feet-in-motion baby. And since it’s superwash, you can toss these little socks right in the wash with everything else. No hand washing required.

If you want to substitute, stick with a fingering weight (sock weight) yarn to keep your gauge and finished size accurate. A wool blend with nylon retains the qualities of natural fibers while adding strength, so any superwash wool and nylon sock yarn will work beautifully here. If wool isn’t an option for you, whether it’s an allergy or a preference, cotton and bamboo blend yarns are a good plant based alternative. Just know that plant fibers don’t have the same stretch as wool, so your finished socks may fit a little differently and won’t have quite as much bounce back after washing.

Sock Start:

Cast on 32 (36, 40, 44) sts loosely.

Divide sts on 4 dpns as follows:

N1: 8 (9, 10, 11) heel sts

N2: 8 (9, 10, 11) instep sts 

N3: 8 (9, 10, 11) instep sts

N4: 8 (9, 10, 11) heel sts

Join. BOR

Cuff:

Work cuff in k2p2 rib for 16 rnds. [1.5” from cast on edge]

Work in pattern stitch for 16 (24, 26, 26) rnds, completing sts on N3. Stop. [3 (3.75, 4, 4)” total from the cast on edge.]

Heel Flap with Heel Stitch:

Slip N4 sts onto N1. [16 (18, 20, 22) sts]

With RS facing, work back and forth on N1 as follows:

Rw 1: *Sl 1 purlwise, k1. Repeat from * to end. Turn.

Continuing with the same needle, pick up 7 (9, 12, 12) sts along the side of the heel.

Pick up and knit a st from row below the first instep st to prevent a hole. [N1: 13 (15, 19, 19) sts total]

With a free needle, work across 8 (9, 10, 11) instep sts in pattern. [N2]

With a free needle, work across 8 (9, 10, 11) instep sts in pattern. [N3]

With free needle, pick up and knit from row below the first heel st to prevent a hole.

With same needle, pick up 7 (9, 12, 12) sts along side of the heel and work across remaining heel sts. [N4: 13 (15, 19, 19) sts total] BOR

Shape Toe – Classic Standard

Change to all k sts.

Rnd 1:

N1: (Sole) Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

N2: (Instep) K1, ssk, knit to end.

N3: (Instep) Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

N4: (Sole) K1, ssk, complete round.

Rnd 2: Work even.

Finishing

Work sts on N1. Slip sts from N4 to opposite end of N1.

Holding two needles together, graft sts using Kitchener Stitch.
