Tips for Knitting Boot Cuffs
You can knit boot cuffs both in the round (either with double pointed needles or circular needles) or you can knit them flat and use the mattress stitch to seam them up after they are complete.
Many boot cuff patterns only have one size, so be sure you know your calf measurement (or whoever you are giving the boot cuffs to). They do have a lot of stretch, so they can fit a wide variety of sizes, but if you are making for someone with a narrow calf or wide calf you will have to adjust (at least for boot cuffs made for tall boots).
If making a boot cuff for a shorter boot you don’t have to worry as much about the circumference as this will be down closer to the ankle area.
Free Knit Boot Cuffs Patterns
1. UGG HUG Boot Toppers
While it’s more common for boot cuffs to peek out like tall socks, I’ve been seeing more and more patterns like this one that are designed to be folded down around the top of the boot. They’re equally cozy and cute, so why not give this one a try? The design features seamless cables knit in the round.

2. Thermal Boot Cuffs
While it’s true that a boot cuff knitting pattern is pretty easy to adjust for size, there’s something to be said for a pattern that does all the math for you. This pattern has 4 sizes available, so you can pick the size that will fit best. It is knit in the round and it can be worked using double pointed needles or the magic loop method.

3. Helmikuu Boot Toppers
Cables are a popular design choice for free knit boot cuff patterns, and it’s no secret why. They look amazing and they really add a lot to the design! This pattern will appeal equally well to beginners and experienced knitters, because it’s available in two versions: one quick and dirty version, and one version that includes helpful tips for less experienced knitters.

4. 2-Needle Boot Toppers
Don’t want to use double pointed needles? Can’t fathom finagling cable needles? No sweat! This boot cuff design is worked flat with just knit and purl stitches. A self striping yarn with short color changes yields excellent results. Plus, you can bind off and seam simultaneously using the clever 3 needle bind off called for in the pattern.

5. Stockinette Cable Boot Cuff
Did you know that you can achieve a faux cable look with just knit and purl stitches? It’s true! This technique works well with the bulky yarn called for here, because it delivers excellent stitch definition. This is a great little trick to use – especially for beginner knitters – because it’s really easy but it looks so fancy!

6. Breckenridge Boot Toppers
I’ve found quite a few free knit boot cuff patterns with vertical cable work, but this is the only one I found with horizontal cablework! The difference is subtle, but also refreshing because the cablework forms a lovely braided ring. And since that’s all the cablework there is, the pattern is still pretty easy. This pattern is knit flat and then seamed at the end.

7. Sidekicks
The nice thing about free knit boot cuff patterns is that they’re usually quite easy to customize. You can make them longer or shorter depending on how much fabric you like tucked into your boot. You could also wear the longer ones more like leg warmers as shown here! This pattern features mock cable ribbing and flared scalloped edges.

12. Reversible Brioche Boot Cuffs
One of the most loved features of the brioche knitting technique is the reversal of colors that occurs on the opposite side. This is a great feature to have in something like boot cuffs which can be flipped inside out in a jiffy for a whole new look. If you’ve never tried brioche before, then this might be a good first project!

13. Audra Boot Cuffs
Since half of the cuff is usually hidden in your boot and there’s usually a generous section of ribbing for a snug fit, even the smallest sections of colorwork are sure to make a big impact. This statement is especially true with a strong color contrast like the light blue and white set against the black shown here. The pattern is knit in the round using stranded colorwork.

15. Checkerboard Boot Cuffs
The classic checkerboard motif has been around the block a time or two, but the geometric style is in right now, so no worries about looking dated. The simple colorwork looks great and is easy to knit using the stranded technique (also known as fair isle), especially since the pattern is worked in the round.

17. Boot Cuffs & Hand Warmers
Since boot cuffs are generally worn over socks or jeans, it’s easy to incorporate a bit of lace without sacrificing warmth or comfort. Eyelets are one of the easiest ways to play with lace in your knitting – yes, easy enough for a beginner knitter! And since boot cuffs don’t take up much yarn, you can use the rest of the skein to make the matching hand warmers.
