Create the perfect baby shower gift or decorations with these simple to knit or crochet diaper babies. This is the perfect way to give a handmade gift!

Photo Tutorial - Knit or Crochet Diaper Babies

I’m always on the lookout for easy and fun handmade gift ideas, so when I saw this post on Pinterest I thought “What a great way to gift some knit or crocheted washcloths!  Even a beginner could make this!” and I put it on my to-do list for a blog post.

These are all over etsy to buy but are super easy to make.  First, I had to create a couple of washcloths and then I had to grab some small diapers, which we are going to need soon anyways!

I would have loved to receive a gift like this for my baby shower and handmade gifts are always appreciated.  If you aren’t up to a large project like a blanket or don’t have much time, this would make the perfect gift.

Pair a couple of these cuties with some onesies, bottles, and of course, more diapers and you are ready to go!

What you'll need for diaper babies

What You’ll Need for Diaper Babies

Newborn or Size 1 diaper (I used a size 1)
You can use any brand.  As a mom of three (soon to be four!) boys our favorites have always been Pampers for new babies, then we switch to a cheaper brand as they get older.

Knit or crochet washcloth (Mine are 9″ square)
The ones I used: Lavender Dreams Washcloth and Simple Textured Washcloth
If you are a beginner, a simple single crochet washcloth would be fine – or try new stitches and improve your skills

Baby Sock
Any tiny socks will do – if you are a more advanced crocheter or knitter, you could even make these yourself!

Permanent Marker (for eyes)
I’ve also seen googly eyes and other ideas.  This was simplest so I went with it.

Straight pins (I used 2)
A longer pin works better.  T-pins or ball pins would probably be best.

How to Assemble Diaper Babies

Step One

Roll up your diaper and secure with a straight pin.  I found it easier to roll it from top to bottom so the top of the diaper stays secure.

Step Two

Lay out your washcloth and fold it into a triangle.

Step Three

Place your rolled-up diaper in the middle of the triangle and fold the right side over.  (This would be to your right as you are looking at it).  Hold it in place.

Step Four

Fold the bottom up and hold in place.

Step Five

Fold the left side over and wrap around to the back.

Step Six

Secure with a second straight pin.

Step Seven

Roll up your sock to make a little hat.

Step Eight

Position the hat to where just a little bit of the diaper is showing.  Use a permanent marker to draw eyes, or attach another form of eye if you prefer.

That’s it!  Super easy.  The hardest part might be deciding upon a washcloth pattern!!  Just be sure to make your washcloths out of a nice, easy-to-care-for cotton yarn (I like Lion Brand 24/7 cotton, Berroco Modern Cotton, or Red Heart Creme de la Creme).

Ideas for a gift basket:
Baby lotions, shampoo, body wash
Bottles, formula (if mom is using it), pacifiers
Onesies, other cute outfits
Diapers, wipes, and more diapers!!  Seriously, these are the things that are most needed!
You can make as few or as many diaper babies as you want for your basket, it just depends upon how big the basket is and how many other items are included.

Final Thoughts on Handmade Diaper Babies

Today we learned how to create diaper babies with hand knit or crocheted washcloths.  These are super quick to make, and when given in this creative way they are the perfect gift.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial and will consider this for your next baby shower gift or even as little decorations for a baby shower.  🙂

Happy Knitting or Crocheting!
