Design Story and Inspiration for the Baby Knit Raccoon Hat

I created this hat for the digital magazine I Like Knitting a while back, when they were looking for cute baby knits for fall.

I love this little outfit! I decided to offer the hat pattern here for free. If you’d like to make the set, you can get the inexpensive ad-free PDF on Ravelry.

Here is a picture of the set in action. It even has a raccoon tail!

About the Yarn

I chose Red Heart Baby Hugs for this design because I love the fact that it’s been tested to be free from harmful levels of over 300 substances.

It’s also super easy to work with and easy to care for. When dealing with babies, you want to use a yarn that will be easy to wash. Babies are messy!

This yarn is the perfect mix of affordability, ease of care and readily available at many big craft stores. My local JoAnn carries it in many colors and I love them all!

This yarn comes in both light (DK) and medium (worsted) options. I chose the worsted weight version for this design in traditional raccoon colors.

Hi Ramona! I’m not sure what happened to the chart in the library – I know others have made this hat so they had to have downloaded it and I didn’t see it in there. I just went in and added it again, so if you head over to the library with the password from the email you can find it now. Sorry about that! 🙂
