What to Consider when Choosing Yarn for Coasters
Let’s take a look at all the factors that should come into play when choosing the perfect cotton yarn.
1. Ease of Care
This is a big one since your coasters may get a bit dirty from time to time (think spills!). The best yarn to choose that is easy to care for and can handle all that a coaster is put through is cotton yarn.
Luckily, most all cotton yarns are easy to care for thanks to the nature of cotton. (Thanks nature!) You can machine wash most cottons and they just get softer with time.
This is what makes them such good choices for coasters.
Some people like acrylic for their coasters, and this is a fine choice for cold items, but be careful with heat since acrylic can melt!
2. Cost
There are many affordable, high-quality cotton yarns on the market today. As knitters or crocheters, we can easily find a yarn that meets our demands.
From strong kitchen cotton to mercerized cotton that’s delicate enough for a summer top, you can discover fantastic inexpensive yarns in virtually any yarn thickness.
3. Weight
Speaking of yarn weight, you want to choose the right weight yarn for your project. Most coasters are in a DK or worsted weight yarn (categories 3 and 4) but you can find cotton yarn to meet your needs in almost any weight.
4. Availability
I know the internet has opened up lots of options, but a lot of the times I want to feel the yarn before I buy it. This isn’t as big of a concern with coasters as it is to something that’s going next to the skin, but it’s still something to take into account.
So as much as I love online shopping, there is just something about being able to handle the yarn that appeals to me. I tend to use yarn that is available locally, but there are times that I really love ordering online from places such as We Crochet (they have several cotton yarns I love that make great coasters!).

Common Coaster Yarn Questions
You can if you want them to be more decorative than functional, but be aware that acrylic will melt if exposed to heat. So while a coffee mug might be okay, if it comes into contact with something hotter it can melt. Cotton or wool yarn are better choices.
Since coasters are typically small (a finished coaster is around 4″ square), you do not need much yarn for a crocheted or knitted coaster. You can easily make several out of a single skein of yarn. This makes them great options for stash busting projects and using up odds and ends of scrap yarn. You can use a different color for each row!
After choosing your yarn, you will need to determine the proper crochet hook or knitting needle size for your project. Check the label on your skein of yarn for a recommendation, or look at your pattern. You will also need a yarn needle and some scissors. Check the pattern for any other notions.
