Design Story and Inspiration for this Easy Crochet Coaster Pattern

I love designing new things and worked out this simple square pattern for a larger project I’m still crocheting. I really love how this design looks and am planning it in all kinds of projects – but first, here is the square itself!

This project works up super quickly in just 5 rounds and has enough interest to go beyond basic design but still only use three common stitches: chains, single crochet and double crochet.

Seriously, if you can single and double crochet, you can make this super simple crochet coaster – and there’s a video to help if you get stuck!

Yarn Options for Crochet Coaster Patterns

I chose to make these out of worsted acrylic yarn. Others enjoy making crocheted coasters out of cotton yarn, and that is a great option as well because it will absorb any condensation that forms on your cup.

I’m on a mission to use up my stash, so acrylic it was! Feel free to use any yarn you like. If you want yours about the same size as mine, use worsted yarn.

I used four colors of yarn for my coaster, but feel free to use a single color, an ombre yarn for ombre crocheted coasters, or any different color you like!

This is a great project to use up scrap yarn, and I can’t wait to show you the different projects I’m working on with this square design!
