Now I know that a lot of people like to complain about how “holey” crochet is, but sometimes holes in your work can be a good thing! Today we’re talking about the filet crochet technique and highlighting some of our favorite free filet crochet patterns.
Ok, so what is filet crochet? This technique uses double crochet stitches to create solid sections in the work and chains to create holes in the work (mesh). The contrast between the solid bits and the holes is where the magic happens. You can even create patterns and pictures in the work using this technique!
The nice thing about filet crochet patterns is that most of them are actually pretty beginner friendly, especially since the technique calls for just basic crochet stitches like double crochet. You’ll also find that many of the patterns call for just a single color, so you don’t have to do any color changes.
Keeping the color palette simple is an easy way to make sure that the filet crochet design really stands out. Intricate patterns and pictures can get lost in the work if you change colors a lot or use a busy color of yarn. Using a single color also helps to unify the design and give it a timeless look.
Are you wondering what kinds of things you can make with the filet crochet technique? You will be happy to hear that this versatile technique lends itself to a wide variety of filet crochet patterns. We’ve got an excellent assortment for you today – everything from blankets, to cardigans, to shawls, to rugs, and much more!
