Anatomy of the Treble Crochet Stitch

Height

The triple crochet stitch is very tall. It is created by wrapping the yarn around twice on the hook before inserting into a stitch and then drawing through two loops at a time.

Turning Chain

The purpose of a turning chain is to bring the yarn up to the height of the stitch, so to bring the yarn up to the height of a tr stitch, you will need to chain 4.

Treble Crochet Photo Tutorial

Step One: Yarn over twice around hook.

This creates more loops for you to work into, making the stitch taller.

Step Two: Insert hook into stitch or space indicated and pull up a loop.

Step Three: Yarn over and draw through two loops (3 loops on hook).

Step Four: Yarn over and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook).

Step Five: Yarn over and draw through last two loops on hook.

That’s it! You’ve made your first triple crochet stitch.

How to Treble Crochet in the Round

When you work triple crochet in the round, you work the stitch the same as working flat, but you must always join the round with a slip stitch to close it, you cannot work triple crochet in continuous rounds.

Increasing with Treble Crochet

Increasing with triple crochet is as simple as working multiple stitches into the same stitch or space, usually you will see instructions to work two stitches in the same stitch, as shown in this photo.

Decreasing with Treble Crochet

The most common decrease for this stitch is treble crochet 2 together and is abbreviated tr2tog. Here is how it is worked:

Step One: Work same as regular treble stitch until there are two loops on hook.

Step Two: Yarn over twice, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).

Step Three: Yarn over and draw through two loops (four loops on hook).

Step Four: Yarn over and draw through two loops (3 loops on hook).

Step Five: Yarn over and draw through three loops on hook.

You’re done!! That’s how you complete a tr2tog, which is the easiest way to decrease when you need to reduce the number of stitches in a row.
