Tips for Great Snowman Knitting Patterns
Many of these patterns are for soft, stuffed snowmen that would make great decorations. I also wanted to include some other patterns, though, that are snowmen as well but aren’t your typical pattern.
For the stuffed snowmen, here are some tips for professional-looking knit snowmen.
- Make sure the needle you are using is smaller than the one recommended on the ball band. Typically I find that two sizes smaller than what is called for gives me a nice, firm fabric that doesn’t show stuffing.
- Shred the stuffing before filling your snowman. This helps it look more even and will avoid any lumps you might get from just shoving the stuffing in there in clumps. (Trust me, I’ve been there…)
- Learn to love and use the mattress stitch. This is the best way to seam up a body of Stockinette (if your pattern has a seam, that is).
Best Yarns for Knitted Snowmen
The good thing about making stuffies of any kind is that the yarn choice isn’t as important as many other makes. Many, many different types of yarn give you an amazing result.
One of my favorite yarns that I made knit snowmen with was simple Lily Sugar N Cream, which is an inexpensive cotton yarn often found at Walmart, and definitely in your big craft stores.
Wool yarns can look nice as well, but if you plan on ever washing it be careful. Wool can definitely shrink!
Any yarn that will give you a nice firm fabric will work well when making one of these snowman knitting pattern.
Free Snowman Knitting Patterns
I love the simplicity of this snowman. It’s made with a cotton worsted weight yarn and you can even just make the head section for an adorable ornament! It’s a free Ravelry download.
This little snowman is knitting! This one is made with Red Heart Super Saver, so it’s a super affordable winter project. You can download the free pattern straight from their website. Red Heart has a cute winter collection – this is one of my favorites.
If you’re short on time and want a quick Christmas card, why not knit one? This cute knit snowman is created with a boucle yarn for some texture, and is a free Ravelry download.
This is such a great way to give a gift card. A purchased gift + hand knitted item = big win! I love making gift card holders because that way I still made something for the recipient, but they also get a gift card to buy something they want. I often do these for my sons’ teachers.
This little guy is adorable. I love the textured yarn for the body and the little hat and scarf. This specific yarn has been discontinued, but another textured or furry yarn should work just as well.
A winter washcloth! If you are pretty new to knitting this will help practice those knits and purls. A little leftover cotton yarn will work perfectly for this snowman wash cloth.
This is amazing. A great way to do color knitting. It’s created in Bernat Super Value, so it won’t break the bank to make this one. The colorwork is on the front and back, with the back actually being the backside of the snowman. I love it! One day I want to knit stockings for all my kids…
My son designed this hat and I just couldn’t leave it off the list. 🙂 When he was younger he drew me a picture of exactly the hat he wanted. You can see his picture and find the free pattern when you click the link above.
Another simple yet cute snowman on the list. Look at that scarf! This project can be made super quickly with bulky yarn.
Another snowman washcloth that I liked – I haven’t ever made a knit dishcloth/washcloth but I love all the designs out there like this one that are charted.
