Learn how to make a basic crochet beanie with this easy free pattern. Uses only single crochet and includes a full video tutorial.
It’s almost beanie season again!! Yay! I am a huge fan of making knit and crochet beanies, and I’m super excited to share this free crochet pattern for a basic beanie with you today.
Design Story and Inspiration
I keep getting asked to make some basic crochet patterns that beginners could create. I have projects with varying skill levels on the blog, but I realized I don’t have as many beginner projects as I would like.
So I decided to create a basic crochet beanie pattern that uses only single crochet, so if you are new to crochet and don’t know a lot of stitches yet, or if you want a super easy project – this one is for you!
About the Yarn
I fell in love with this Lion Brand Mandala Watercolor yarn the second I saw it at my local JoAnn store, so I bought a couple of skeins thinking that a beanie and cowl combo would be a good idea.
I love the way it works up!! This yarn is so pretty, and because it is a chunky (size 5) yarn, it makes for a super simple and quick project.

Pattern Details
This beginner beanie pattern is worked from the top of the hat down by starting with a magic ring (also called a magic circle). Don’t worry if you’ve never done a magic ring before – there is a video tutorial to help you!
Once the body of the hat is created, the ribbing is worked in rows and attached every other row. Be sure to view the video if you are having any trouble.
How to Customize This Easy Crochet Hat Pattern
There are so many ways you can customize this easy crochet beanie pattern. Here are just a few:
Use worsted weight yarn (which is a medium weight yarn instead of the bulky weight we are using here) with the recommended hook size to create a smaller hat.
Work the single crochets of the chunky beanie body in the front loop only for a different look, then work the ribbing at the bottom of the hat as written.
Work less increase rounds for a smaller head circumference, or more increase rounds to make different sizes. Adjust the number of rows (rounds) to have a longer or shorter hat height.
Add a faux fur pom pom or a yarn pom pom to the top.
Add more rounds of single crochet stitches to make slouchy hats.
