A basic crochet hat made with double crochet stitches in the round turns into an adorable sloth with a few quick and easy accents. The sloth’s face, eye masks, eyes, and nose are each made separately and then attached onto the hat. Ear flaps form the sloth’s arms and hands – complete with claws.

It just makes sense for a crochet sloth amigurumi to be embroidered to look asleep, don’t you think? Plus, straight lines are much easier to embroider than eyes, and you don’t have to worry about safety eyes posing a potential choking hazard. This pocket size sloth friend is made with just single crochet stitches.

7. Amelia the Sloth

Usually when people think of sloths they are envisioning the three toed sloth with the classic mask on the eyes and flat face. This realistic and fluffy sloth design is modeled after the Hoffmann’s Two-Toed Sloth (named after the German naturalist Karl Hoffmann). It looks like it’s made with faux fur yarn, but it’s actually just acrylic yarn that has been brushed out.

This genius designer made “frankenskeins” of all her little scraps of yarn by tying them together with the magic knot. Then she used those scrappy skeins to create this fluffy and colorful sloth! Common Questions about Crochet Sloth Patterns

What materials do you need to crochet a sloth?

First you will need your yarn (usually light brown yarn and cream, or a variation of these), a crochet hook in the appropriate size, a tapestry needle (also called a yarn needle) to weave in ends and sew pieces together, a stitch marker or two to keep track of where you are in your rounds) and some stuffing.

You also might need safety eyes if you decide to use them (but please not for those under 3 years of age!). Instead you might go with black yarn or embroidery floss to embroider the eyes.

What techinques will I need to know to crochet an amigurumi sloth?

Most ami patterns will need these skills: magic ring (also called magic circle), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet stitch (sc) in the round (rnd), invisible decrease, and some basic sewing skills (most of the patterns will have you sew a few parts on).
