Looking for a sweet baby blanket that doubles as a stuffed animal pal? This crochet animal blanket pattern fits the bill!

Unroll this little guy, and he’s a blanket. Roll him up and he’s a teddy bear! This project works up very quickly in bulky yarn and makes a great baby shower gift. Two large buttons attached securely hold it closed when rolled up.

The perfect gift for a baby or kid in your life!

Design Story and Inspiration for the Crochet Animal Blanket

I love cute and cuddly baby blankets and wanted to create an easy crochet pattern that would be unique in that it could turn into a stuffed toy.

I decided to create an animal blanket pattern that would become a stuffed animal to cuddle. I chose a bear for my animal, but you could easily change it into any animal you like by altering the ears and face.

About the Yarn

I picked up this Serenity Chunky from Premier Yarns at my local JoAnn and it’s a wonderful bulky yarn.

I like the loft and texture of this yarn and it was perfect for a cuddly crochet baby blanket. It’s acrylic so it’s easy care and comes in 100g skeins (with 109 yards per skein).

You can substitute any bulky weight (#5) yarn that gets gauge.

If you’d like to make this blanket in a lighter weight, maybe worsted weight yarn, you can work this stitch pattern in multiples of

Crochet Pattern Details

This free crochet pattern is begun with a simple rectangular blanket.

The blanket is rolled up and then the ears, arms and legs are sewn on. The blanket is held closed by two very large buttons (make sure the buttons are way too large for choking if you are giving to a baby!)

I love coming to your site, it’s amazing. I wish though that in the patterns that you show using bulky yarn that you could have a pattern that uses regular yarn weight it’s hard for my hands to crochet bulky yarn. I have found several afghan patterns also that I love the look but I can’t make them because of the yarn weight.

      Hi Sandy,

This blanket can be made in worsted weight, it just turns out to be more of a stroller blanket or lovie. Check out this project on Ravelry that uses Caron Simply Soft. I think it’s even cuter than the one I made! She said it would work out great for a car seat or swing so it might be an option if you want to make this blanket.

I’m so glad you like coming to my site! 🙂 I’m releasing a new baby blanket pattern tomorrow that uses worsted weight if you want to check it out.

Love this and will make it, but I will have to come up with a clever way – Possibly ribbon to secure the rolled blanket. I do not want to use buttons that could come off i and be a choking hazard.
