Tips for Crochet Baby Shoes

Most crochet baby shoes/booties start with the sole of the shoe and then work up. This is different from a lot of slipper patterns, which start at the toe and work toward the back of the foot.

Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch. I used to not do this and it was so hard to know my stitch count! Even if you think you have a good idea of where the first stitch is, it’s still a good idea to mark it.

When making a shoe for a little foot, it’s important to know around what size you should be making. Here are some general guidelines:

Newborn: 3″ – 3 1/2″

0-3 Months: 3 1/2″ – 4 1/4″

6-12 Months: 4 1/2″ – 4 3/4″

18-24 Months: 4 3/4″ – 5 1/2″

Keep these measurements in mind when choosing the size to make for your baby shoe. Luckily they do stretch a bit, and even if they are a bit big they still usually stay on precious little feet.

Yarn Options for Crochet Baby Shoes

You want to choose a yarn that’s very soft as it will be right against baby’s skin. Usually babies don’t wear socks with their crochet baby shoes, although you can definitely put socks on baby’s feet and then the booties.

Most of these bootie patterns call for DK (#3) or worsted weight (#4) yarn. I love to make mine out of cotton, although sometimes I will use acrylic like the ones seen in the video above. I shy away from wool because it can be scratchy and some people are allergic. I save that for winter projects for me or my older kids.
