Design Story and Inspiration for the Ballet Crochet Baby Slippers

This pair of crochet baby slippers was originally designed for I Like Crochet magazine’s December 2017 issue. The theme was the Nutcracker, and I thought a pair of baby ballet pointe shoes would be perfect – they agreed!

These baby booties are crocheted starting with the sole and then the body of the shoe. Then ribbons and stick-on crystal accents are added. These would be for a photo shoot with the crystals and ribbons attached. If you are making them for everyday wear I would skip the add-ons and go for these Baby Ballet Flats instead.

Yarn Options for Baby Ballet Slippers

Yarns for baby things need to be easy to care for and soft on baby skin. For this pair of crochet baby slippers I chose one of my favorite baby yarns – Red Heart Baby Hugs Light. I love both the light and medium versions of this yarn, which has been tested to be free from harmful levels of over 300 chemicals. Sounds great to me!

It comes in a wide variety of colors, can be machine washed (I have tested this many times!) and works up very well. I love using this yarn and have used it on many different projects, including these:

How to Customize the Ballet Crochet Baby Slippers

These slippers are adorable in one color, but you can also work them in multiple colors. I’ve seen them with the sole one color and the body of the shoe in a different color and it worked out really great.

You can also make them without the ribbons and accents and put a simple elastic strap on if desired.
