Tips for Crocheting for Babies
The biggest thing to keep in mind when making crochet baby patterns is how the item will be cared for after it is made. Will it need to be washed? With babies things usually get messy, so you want a yarn that’s easy to care for and possibly even one that is machine washable.
The next thing to keep in mind is how the yarn feels against the skin. Baby skin is sensitive, so you want a yarn that will not irritate skin and that feels good. That doesn’t mean that you have to choose an expensive yarn, although you certainly can when making baby wearables since they are so small.
Keep in mind that some people are allergic to wool and that it can be scratchy, so you might want to avoid wool altogether. There are lots of yarns out there marked “baby” yarns that are wonderful. Let’s take a look at some of the best.
What are the Best Yarns for Crochet Baby Patterns?
These are some of my personal favorite yarns for making baby crochet patterns:
Red Heart Baby Hugs, comes in Light (DK Weight #3) and Medium (Worsted Weight #4)
This yarn is a premium soft acrylic that has been tested to be free from harmful levels of over 300 substances. I’ve personally used this yarn for several projects, thrown it in the washing machine and it holds up very well.
Lion Brand Oh Baby (Fine #2)
This yarn is 100% organic cotton, a great choice for babies and others with sensitive skin. Comes in 12 great colors and is a great alternative to acrylic if you are looking for a cotton yarn suitable for babies that is also suitable for the washer and dryer.
A Star is Born: Naptime Yarn (Worsted Weight #4)
This yarn is a super soft chenille yarn that comes in mostly pastel colors. Machine washable and dryable, which is a big plus! Made from 100% polyester.
Brava Sport (Sport Weight #2)
This yarn is 100% acrylic for durability and ease of care. Machine washable and dryable, this yarn also comes in worsted and bulky weight.
Comfy Worsted (Worsted Weight #4)
This yarn is a blend of 75% pima cotton and 25% acrylic, so it has the best of both worlds – lightweight, soft and machine washable and dryable!
