Find 25 amazing free knit sock patterns in this single collection. From basic socks for beginners to cables and lace, they’re all here.
Why did you learn to knit? You might be surprised at just how many people answer that question with, “Because I wanted to learn how to knit socks!” There’s just something about knitting yourself (or someone else) a nice pair of socks that is incredibly satisfying.
If you’ve already been knitting socks at all, then you know just how addictive they can be! Free-knit sock patterns are super popular because they work up quickly, and only require small amounts of yarn. In addition to that, they make excellent gifts for any occasion.
You might be wondering, is it hard to knit socks? Well, it certainly doesn’t have to be! We’ve got an amazing assortment of sock knitting patterns for you today, many of which are perfectly suited to beginner knitters. If you can knit, purl, and work in the round, then you’re well on your way to knitting your first pair of socks.
Even if you haven’t quite mastered working in the round, there is one pattern I’ve included that you can still make. Yes, there are free-knit sock patterns out there that are worked flat, and they’re every bit as amazing as the rest of them!
If you prefer a bit of a challenge when you knit, don’t worry! We have plenty of more intricate free-knit sock patterns for you too. Just wait and see!
One more thing, you’ll notice that I’ve included notes on how the heel of the socks is worked (there are a myriad of ways) and whether you’ll be working from the cuff down or from the toe up. It’s not like any particular way is better than the rest, but some folks have developed a preference you see. If you’re new to the world of sock knitting (Welcome!), then I suggest you try a few and see how it goes. Happy knitting!!
Tips for Knitting Socks
Most socks are knit on double-pointed needles (DPN’s) or on one circular needle using the magic loop method. You can also use two circular needles to knit socks, so experiment with the different methods to see which one works best for you. I found that the magic loop method was my favorite after I got the hang of it.
Be sure to start with a simple pattern if you are new to sock knitting, preferably one that is made for beginners, for your first pair. Then you can branch out into ones that use more than just a simple knit stitch and purl stitch.
Finally, make sure you knit a gauge swatch. I know, I know – we all hate to! But, for something that has to fit like a pair of socks, you need to know how many stitches you are getting per inch.
Best Yarns for Handknit Socks
Most people prefer to knit socks with wool for comfy, durable wool socks. Wool is elastic holds up well, and is an even better choice when blended with a bit of nylon.
You want to make sure, however, that the yarn you choose is machine washable because I don’t know too many people who like to wash their socks by hand!! A good superwash wool is a perfect choice. You can easily find yarns made for socks that have the right fiber combo and are machine washable.
If you are allergic to wool, another great option is cotton, although it is not as elastic as wool. There are still some great blends out there, though, that will work for socks, so test some out to see which ones you like.
