Design Story and Inspiration for This Crochet Mug Cozy

It’s that time of year again where I design for my annual Holiday Maker’s Challenge!! This is the 7th year that I have done the challenge, and I’m excited to be doing it again!

I designed this pattern as part of the 2025 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:

1. Uses stash yarn

2. Is easy to intermediate

3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)

4. Is well received by gift recipients

This fits the bill because you can make several mug cozies with a single skein of yarn and they are very well received as gifts! Pair it with some coffee and a mug that fits and you’re good to go!

Yarn Options for Mug Cozies

For this pattern, I used We Crochet Dishie, a worsted weight yarn that is wonderful for projects like these. It’s a category #4 yarn and 100% cotton, which I definitely recommend for mug cozies.

You don’t have to use cotton for a mug cozy, though, as mugs don’t usually get hot enough to melt synthetic fibers, so I’ve seen cozies made with all types of yarns. Grab some worsted weight yarn and use up that stash!

Pattern Details for the Mixed Cluster Stitch Mug Cozy

This pattern is worked in the Mixed Cluster Stitch, a wonderfully textured stitch that is easy to learn. It’s a combination of a row of single crochet followed by a row of mixed cluster stitches.

Don’t know how to work the mixed cluster stitch? Check out this video tutorial!

Mixed Cluster Mug Cozy Pattern

Ch 16.

Row 1 (WS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 15 sts.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), MC inserting hook into 1st then 3rd st, *ch 1, MC insertring hook 1st into same st as previous MC; repeat from * ending last rep in last st, hdc in same st; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st; turn.

Rows 4-33: Repeat rows 2-3.

**If you have your mug handy, try it on at this time. See if you need to add more rows to fit your mug. I used a large sized mug and it fit right near the handle when slightly stretched.  (Mug shown is around 4.5” tall and almost 4” in diameter).

If you are happy with the fit of your mug cozy, move on to finishing.  Do not break yarn.

Finishing

Fold mug cozy in half, bringing row 1 even with last row.

Slip st first 3 sts together, fasten off.

Join yarn at opposite end, slip st 3 sts together, fasten off, leaving the middle sts open for the mug handle to slip through.

Weave in ends.

Final Thoughts on our Fun Crochet Coffee Cozy

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoyed designing it!!

Happy Crocheting!
