Design Story and Inspiration for this Crochet Beanie Pattern
I wanted to make a hat that was worked flat (like my Easiest Ever Knit Hat) and decided to try one of my favorite crochet ribbing stitches for it. This turned out even better than I imagined and I really love the reversible nature of this hat!
This was my “car project” that I worked on here and there while I was waiting to drop off or pick up my boys from school, and it was a perfect project for that. It was easy to pick up and put down, and it worked up quickly.
You choose which side is the “right” side – wear it uncuffed with the ribbing showing for a slouch hat, or turn it the other way and turn up the ribbing as a cuff… I can’t decide which way I like it better!

Yarn Options for This Easy Crochet Beanie
I picked up this really neat hand-dyed alpaca yarn in Colorado when we went to visit my sister-in-law and her family. I try to choose a unique local skein every time we visit somewhere with a cool yarn store, and this one really caught my eye.
This yarn is Crazy for Colorado from the Willow Creek Fiber Mill. I picked it up in Estes Park, CO, where it was spun and dyed. Truly local!
This is an alpaca blend yarn (80% alpaca and 20% wool) and it is a worsted weight yarn (category #4). Any yarn that gets gauge will work, but try to choose a yarn that has a lot of “give” to it and creates a flexible fabric. This yarn was particularly “springy” with this stitch pattern.

Ribbed Hat Pattern Details
This hat is worked flat in a simple two row repeat. It works up quickly and makes a great gift!
The hardest part for me was remembering not to chain at the beginning of row 2 when working my sc.
If you need to, use stitch markers to help you find the first and last sts of the rows, and some people find it helpful to count out the 40 sts each row 2.
