Have a person that’s hard to make for? Why not try an ornament for their tree! These whip up in no time and cover inexpensive ornaments that can be found at the Dollar Tree or JoAnn.
Design Story and Inspiration for this Simple Ornament Pattern
I love the granny square ornaments that I’ve seen online, and I wanted to make something easy that could be a total last-minute holiday gift, so I designed this Easy Square Motif Ornament that takes just two easy squares!
I used this square motif to make the Modern Granny Square Tote, and just by using a thicker yarn I got the perfect size squares for my ornaments! I love this easy square pattern, and you’ll be seeing it in more designs soon.
I designed this pattern as part of the 2024 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:
1. Uses stash yarn
2. Is easy to intermediate
3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)
4. Is well received by gift recipients
This fits the bill for these criteria, and I love how cozy they are (my son thinks so, too, and these are his size 10 feet in the photos!).

Yarn Options for this Free Crochet Ornament Pattern
I used one skein of We Crochet Heatherly Worsted for this pattern. It took considerably less than a skein, though, especially considering I already made a pair of knit slipper socks, and had more than enough left over for this pattern. I could make 2 or 3 more easily with what I have left after these 2 projects.
You can use any worsted weight yarn you like (category #4), just make sure it gets the same gauge so you end up with the same size as the pattern.
Of course, if your ornament is smaller or larger you can adjust your yarn and hook size to fit. The square is pretty stretchy, so if you think it might be a little small for your ornament, go ahead and make 2 squares and connect them and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Square Motif Ornament Pattern Details
This pattern begins with the magic ring and is worked in the round using a combination of chains, double crochet, double crochet clusters and single crochet. It’s only four rounds, too, making it super quick!!
