Wanting to make a gift for someone who is hard to buy for? Why not make a crochet Christmas ornament for the tree?

crochet christmas ornament

Do you have a special ornament on your tree that you look forward to seeing every year? I do!

One of those is a small crochet bell that my aunt made me. She passed away several years ago and is the only one on my Mom’s side who crocheted (my dad’s side only had my great-grandmother!).

I imagine her lovingly making the ornaments and thinking of us as she made them. I’d love for someone special to think of me when hanging ornaments on the tree.

Design Story and Inspiration for the Fair Isle Crochet Christmas Ornament

This is the first ornament I’ve designed and I threw some color work into the mix, too!!

I’ve really started enjoying adding color to my work, but if the color portion seems like too much, don’t worry – you can easily work it in one color, just work the chart portion even in sc.

Get creative! Work it in stripes, whatever you want! I can’t wait to see all the variations of this one.

About the Yarn

I’m trying to use up my stash and also show how you can use the same yarn for several projects, so you might recognize this yarn from the Mini Christmas Stocking.

I really love Lion Brand Coboo and I thought it’s light weight would be perfect for an ornament. (I also adore this yarn for my dolls – like Morgan).

I picked the same shades as the stocking (but I did throw in an extra shade of blue). My husband asked why I didn’t do red and green, but I wanted a more winter vibe than just holiday. What do you think?

You can substitute this with any DK weight yarn you have in your stash – and, of course, the sky is the limit as far as colors are concerned.

Now, I’m totally hooked. I want to make a ton of different designs!! Let me know in the comments if you’d like to see more ornaments before the holidays!

Crochet Christmas Ornament Pattern Details

This pattern is worked in the round, working into the back loops only.

If you are using a styrofoam ball, work the pattern until you are done with the chart portion, then put the ball inside. You may have to dig into the ball just a bit when working the decreases, but it doesn’t change the shape of the ornament.

What You’ll Need

Yarn: Lion Brand Coboo, (DK weight 3), 1 skein each in White (A), Denim (B), Steel Blue (C)

Hook: US Size D (3.25mm)

Notions: Yarn needle, scissors, one 3″ foam ball or fiberfill, ornament cap

Gauge: 24 sts and 24 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Sc Back Loop Only

Finished Size: Approximately 3″ in diameter

Crochet Christmas Ornament Pattern Notes

Work every stitch in the back loop only.

Join each round with a slip stitch and pull tightly. Also pull the ch-1 tight at the beginning of each round. This will help hide the joins.

Stitch Abbreviations and Descriptions

Chain (ch)
Single Crochet (sc)
Increase (inc) – work 2 sc in same st
Decrease (dec) – single crochet 2 together (sc2tog)

Round 8: *6 sc, inc; repeat around (48 sts).

Rounds 9-19: Work chart.

**If using sytrofoam ball, insert ball at this point to avoid pulling on your sts. If using fiberfill, work a couple of decrease rows first, then stuff firmly as you go.

Change to A.

Round 20: *6 sc, dec; repeat around (42 sts).

Change to C.
Round 21: *5 sc, dec; repeat around (36 sts).
Round 22: *4 sc, dec; repeat around (30 sts).

Change to A.
Round 23: *3 sc, dec; repeat around (24 sts).

Change to C.
Round 24: *2 sc, dec; repeat around (18 sts).
Round 25: *Sc, dec; repeat around (12 sts).

Change to A
Round 26: Dec 6 times (6 sts).

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Weave tail end into last 6 sts and pull tightly to close. Make sure all the yarn tails from the color work are hidden inside.

Weave in last end.

Attach ornament cap. I used the Styrofoam ball and found that pushing the wires of the cap in as close as possible and sticking into the ball held very well. If you want more security, you can add a drop or two of hot glue when putting the cap on.

I picked up a plastic ornament at JoAnn that was made for crafting and took off the ornament cap. Now that I see it’s the same size, I might try putting the whole ornament inside next time!

Hi Joan! Color B is only used in the chart so I didn’t write written instructions for it. 🙂

I’m excited by all the color work I’ve been seeing this year. With so many of us staying home more it brings out more desire for challenges, IMO. I’d definitely love seeing more color work in any kind of ornament or Christmas decor you have in your mind! Thank you so much for including us in your artistry!!

I registered my email and was sent to your page that welcomed me. I searched for the Faire Isle Ornament chart and got a message that there was nothing matching my request.

It might be because you added an e to fair. If you can’t find it by search, scroll down past the free patterns to the charts and you should be able to find it there. It’s definitely in the resource library – I need to add pics to make it easier to find everything. 🙂

Cant find the Fair Isle Snowflake chart. This just keeps taking me around in circles. I had this happen before with one of your patterns and its a little frustrating. Am I missing something.

The chart is in the resource library. There is an entire section labeled charts and the link is in there. There are also instructions at the top of the resource library for how to find things since it’s grown so much.
