To crochet an amazing baby blanket you need 3 things: a soft yarn, a crochet hook and a bit of patience. Blanket yarn is a soft and snuggly choice that will also save you some time. That’s why these super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns are perfect for last minute gifts!

The thickness of blanket yarn doesn’t lend itself well to complicated stitchwork, so you will find that many super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns are really quite simple. You can make the majority of the patterns on this list using just the basic stitches: single, half double, double, and/or treble crochet.

Of course, there are also a few lace designs here for you to peruse as well as one stunning cablework design. So if you are the type of crocheter who loves a challenge, then you will certainly find the baby blanket crochet patterns you are looking for here.

What is super bulky yarn?

The Craft Yarn Council has a standard yarn weight system, and super bulky yarn is a category #6 on their scale, with a crochet gauge range of 7-9 stitches to four inches (10cm). The only yarn weight heavier than super bulky is jumbo weight yarn. See our guide to super bulky yarn here.

If you don’t happen to have any super bulky yarn in your stash or if you run out of blanket yarn mid project, there is one trick that you can use to substitute yarn in these super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns. That trick is to use 2 strands of worsted weight yarn instead. And it’s quite a nice trick to have in your back pocket, especially considering that the average stash has more worsted than any other weight of yarn!

As you will see from this list, many super bulky baby blankets are made with Bernat Blanket Yarn or Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn. Some are made with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick as well. I love the Bernat Blanket yarns because they have a wonderful feel, are great for sensitive skin and make a great blanket! If you like a textured super bulky yarn, try Bernat Pipsqueaks or Lion Brand Hometown yarn.

Tranquility Blanket

Do you think the Tranquility Blanket was named for the easy and relaxing stitch repeat the pattern calls for or for the sweet serenity the recipient of the blanket is sure to feel? I guess we’ll never know. Quick, someone make one and report back! The pattern calls for just single and half double crochet stitches.

Little Super Hero Blanket

Sometimes it seems like there are way more super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns for girls than there are for boys. Of course, both boys and girls can enjoy this fun superhero blanket and it is sure to spark their creativity and imagination! You can crochet one using just double crochet stitches. The star is made separately and then sewn on.

Quick and Coziest Blanket

Add a little lacework to the classic crochet chevron pattern to instantly upgrade the look of your baby blanket. This fun and fancy design uses single and double crochet stitches. I particularly love the use of gray stripe accents to break up the baby pink background.

End of the Rainbow Blanket

Here’s yet another one of our super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns with a variation on the chevron. This one uses single and double crochet stitches to achieve a more organic shaped ripple and less of a sharp and pointy chevron.

Felix Blanket

One easy way to make super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns even fancier is to attach a fabric backing. The Felix Blanket uses a soft flannel fabric that’s just to die for! The pattern calls for single, half double, and double crochet stitches. You’ll need a bit of worsted weight yarn in addition to the blanket yarn to help you attach your blanket to the fabric.

Tri-Color Linen Baby Blanket

blanket in three colors lying on floor

Softness in baby blankets is an absolute must and it doesn’t get much softer than velvet! This luxurious design uses the linen stitch, a.k.a. moss stitch which alternates single crochet and chain stitches. Using 3 colors as shown is key to making color changes a breeze and not having to carry any unused strands along with you.

4 Hour Crochet Blanket

Here’s a great color combo idea for super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns for boys: blue, brown and white. This pattern alternates half double crochet in the front loop only with half double crochet in the back loop only. This riff on the classic half double crochet stitch yields an exciting texture and a more solid surface with no holes.

Go To Baby Shower Blanket

Remember that trick I talked about in the intro? Here you can see it in action! You can use either blanket yarn or two strands of aran/worsted weight yarn held together to crochet this simple yet stunning design. The pattern calls for just single and double crochet stitches.

Baby Waffle Blanket

colorful crochet baby blanket made with the waffle stitch

It doesn’t get much squishier and softer than waffle stitch! What a perfect choice for a cute and cozy baby blanket. Waffle stitch can be a bit of a yarn eater, but the end result is totally worth it. Choose a self-striping blanket yarn if you don’t want to have to mess around with color changes.

Tunisian Entrelac Baby Blanket

Tunisian entrelac is a fun and interesting technique for creating projects one square at a time. Each subsequent square builds directly onto the existing squares so there’s no sewing involved. It’s actually a neat way to dip your toes into the world of tunisian crochet because you don’t need the special long hook to accommodate such a small number of stitches.

The Snow Drifter Chunky Blanket

Think outside the baby blanket box of traditional baby pinks and blues. Opt for clean and crisp white instead to make a big visual impact. This gorgeous lacework design uses the peephole chevron stitch. The pattern even includes instructions for making throws of larger sizes if you decide you’d like to make one for yourself too.

3 Hour Blanket

As it turns out, some super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns are so quick to make that you can have them done in less than a day. This one is especially fast, since it uses mostly double crochet stitches (other than the starting and ending rows which are all single crochet).

Baby Toy Box Blanket

The Baby Toy Box Blanket uses a modified granny stitch called the box stitch. This stitch particularly shines when used with a self striping yarn. It’s fun, it’s colorful, and it’s oh-so-squishy and soft too. What’s not to love about this kaleidoscope design?

Marshmallow Blanket

The colors in this Marshmallow Blanket remind me of Easter. Maybe it’s that bright yellow that resembles spring chicks or that cheery pink that looks like Peeps! You have plenty of time to make one before Easter rolls around this year. The pattern calls for just single and double crochet stitches.

Supersize the classic c2c crochet technique with blanket yarn to make the squishy and soft graphgan of your dreams. This sweet cartoon bear would make an excellent friend for a new baby. Actually, you could really use blanket yarn on any c2c graph. It would just turn out a lot bigger than expected!

Star of the Show Baby Blanket

Filet crochet is a fun and interesting technique that uses double crochet and chain stitches to create images in your project. The Star of the Show Baby Blanket design features a sea of shining stars. There are many other filet crochet designs out there for you to try if you discover that you like this technique.

Quick and Easy Baby Blanket

You can use the c2c technique for more than just graphgans. Thick diagonal stripes can be just as stunning. The neat thing about working blankets from the corner like this is that it’s really easy to see how big your blanket is going to end up when you are halfway through.

 Granny Rectangle Baby Blanket

super bulky yarn granny square blanket

Opt for a granny rectangle instead of a granny square to get dimensions that are more typical of most super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns. The generous size of this blanket design is sure to be appreciated by the baby as he or she grows. Using a dappled yarn with subtle color changes makes it a little more interesting than a plaid solid design.

Crochet Big Cables Blanket

Crochet cablework always makes a big impression, even more so in super bulky blanket yarn! If you have never attempted cablework before, this actually wouldn’t be a bad place to start because the thickness of the yarns makes it easier to see your stitches.

Panda Bear Hug Hooded Blanket

Add a hood to a blanket to make it even more functional. Add a panda face to that hood to make it even more fun. Now you’ve got yourself a recipe for crochet success! This blanket would be a great choice for older babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. The pattern calls for single, double, and treble crochet stitches.

Poppin Blanket

baby sitting on crochet blanket with large bobbles

Super bulky yarn baby blanket crochet patterns that are crocheted from the center out make it so that you don’t have to start your project out by counting a million chain stitches. The other neat thing about center out designs is that you can stop whenever you are satisfied with the size or whenever you run out of yarn. This pattern calls for double crochet and popcorn stitches for what looks like rows of large bobbles.

Little Dots Blanket

crochet baby blanket made with squares in ceam, blue and brown

Motif style blankets are crocheted one square at a time. This makes them perfect for crocheting on the go. It can also be a little easier on your hands, since blankets can get quite heavy when you crochet them all at once. You can make one of these darling Little Dots Blankets using double and treble crochet stitches.
