Brr it’s getting cold outside! Time to cozy up with a cute handmade creation. Crocheting a sweater is such a rewarding experience that will keep you looking cute and staying warm all winter long (plus you can learn some new techniques along the way!).

There are many crochet sweater patterns out there, but not all of them can be called warm. You won’t find any super lacey, very thin, or short sleeve sweaters here. Instead, you’re getting a curated list of warm crochet sweater patterns that you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again.

If you don’t know how to crochet a sweater, don’t sweat it! Many of the warm crocheted sweater patterns we are featuring today are totally beginner friendly. My best advice is to look for patterns in this list that include video tutorials, because these videos can be total lifesavers if you get stuck. I’ve also made sure to point out the patterns that are approachable for beginners in the descriptions that I give, so keep an eye out for those!

If you’re a sweater crocheting pro, you’re in the right place too! We’ve got plenty of more advanced designs for you to really sink your teeth into and grow your skills as a crocheter. Be on the lookout for more complicated stitch patterns and out of the box construction methods. After all, there’s more than one way to crochet a sweater! For instance, if you’ve already crocheted a sweater from flat pieces, maybe try one that’s worked from the top down instead.

So what kinds of patterns can you expect to find today? Well, other than being warm (which is the key thing here) all of these sweater patterns bring a little something different to the table. Choose between cardigans and pullovers; textured and smooth designs; cropped or long lengths; and monochrome or colorful designs. Of course, the best way for you to check out all these amazingly warm crochet sweater patterns is to simply scroll down, grab your crochet hook and see for yourself!

Heather Sweater

Hop on board the color block train! You’re going to like it here, because color block patterns were practically made to be stash busters. (Because if you use up some of the yarn in your stash, then you get to buy more, right?) The easy crochet pattern is worked from the top down in the round so you can try it on as you go.

Tilted granny squares breathe fresh life into the tried and true granny square sweater design. Combine that with a sophisticated, neutral color palette and you’ve got yourself one stylish recipe for crochet cardigan success. The ribbed edging and cuffs are actually knitted on this design, but if you don’t knit it should be easy enough to substitute crochet instead.

Party People Pullover

Self-striping yarn is the secret to beautiful and bright combinations of color without having to weave in any extra ends. The pullover pattern itself is also super easy, because all of the pieces are worked in rows with basically no shaping. The design uses half double crochet cluster stitches for a little added texture.

Snowbound Pullover

Everything about the next one of our cozy sweater patterns screams cozy – the cowl neck, the long length, and the solid stitch pattern! Breton Stripe Sweater

The key to crocheting warm crochet sweater patterns that you’ll actually want to wear is drape. Sure, tight stitches might make the sweater warmer, but it will also make the fabric very stiff. For a fabric with both warmth and movement, you need drape! That’s where this surprisingly easy moss stitch sweater design comes in!

Yarn: Knit Picks Andean Treasure (Sport Weight #3)

Houndstooth Comfy Cardigan

Did you know that you can recreate the iconic houndstooth pattern in crochet using just basic crochet stitches? It’s true! The pattern alternates single and double crochet stitches. Combine that with alternating colors every row and – boom – houndstooth! Be sure to choose two colors with great contrast to each other like classic black and white.

Frosted Windows

One great way to add some extra warmth into your crochet sweater projects is to hold two strands of yarn together. This pattern combines a soft and fuzzy kid silk yarn with a luxurious alpaca wool blend. The pattern itself is totally easy, since it is split into panels which are each worked flat and then seamed together.

There’s no denying that warm crochet sweater patterns take a lot of time to complete! If you are worried about getting bored with your project halfway through, choose a pattern with a time saving trick like this one. Using a bulky weight yarn really helps cut down on time spent crocheting, and it also gives your project that coveted chunky chic look.

Easy Breezy Cardigan

If you don’t mind a big project, you can take an alternate route and choose a sweater pattern that calls for a thinner weight yarn. What you lose in time spent crocheting is more than made up for in beautiful drape and wearability. Just look at the way this sweater flows! The best part is that it’s all double crochet stitches, so it’s totally beginner friendly.

The Pemberley Pullover

You will find yourself coming back to this classic pullover pattern again and again. The design features a v-neck, ribbed cuffs, and a ribbed hem. It has got a collegiate vibe that I’m really digging. It’s really not much more difficult than a dishcloth to make, since it’s all just half double crochet stitches worked in rows, and there’s a video tutorial if you get stuck.

Winter Crop Sweater

If you are a visual learner, then you might prefer warm crochet sweater patterns that have video tutorials. Learn how to crochet this cute and classic cropped sweater by following along with the step by step video. My favorite part is the breakdown of the design in the beginning. The designer actually sketches it for you and it’s so helpful for visualizing the construction.

Dream Catcher Cardi

The oversized fit of cocoon style cardigans is the perfect recipe for warmth and coziness. It’s basically the socially acceptable version of wearing a blanket! The star of this design is the decorative lace diamond on the back. You start there and then keep going to make the rest of the cardigan, so it’s all one piece. A couple simple seams and you’re all done!

Laoise Turtleneck Sweater

The next stop on our tour of warm crochet sweater patterns is texture town! This turtleneck is chock full of texture, thanks to post stitches. The design also calls for two basic crochet stitches: single and double crochet. I really like the contrast between the texture of the body and the smooth sleeves and hem.

Diamond in the Rough Sweater

While we’re in texture town, let’s pay a little visit to this pretty little pullover. It features a dazzling display of raised diamonds that are created with post stitches. The pattern also calls for single and double crochet stitches. The sweater is worked flat in back and forth rows and then pieced together.

Tolorraine Sweater

An oversized sweater is the perfect compliment to a pair of skinny jeans – and it’s a great way to find that golden outfit balance between cozy and cute. This design is worked from the top down starting with a round yoke, and it calls for extended single crochet clusters. Despite the size, it’s still a pretty quick project thanks to the bulky weight yarn.

Designer: Coco Crochet Lee

Yarn: Lion Brand Color Made Easy (Bulky Weight #5)

Here’s another oversized design that’s sure to turn some heads. The bold stripe design uses single, half double, and double crochet stitches. The sweater is still nice and cozy despite the lace elements because of the bulky weight yarn. If this design looks familiar to you, that’s because it was inspired by The Babysitter’s Club.

Designer: Two of Wands

Yarn: Lion Brand Hue + Me (Bulky Weight #5)

Basketweave Winter Sweater

Textured designs not only look fantastic, but I find that they are also warmer. The basketweave stitch especially is a very warm stitch that’s commonly used for blankets. So why not incorporate it into a sweater design that will keep you just as cozy! The pieces for this pattern are worked flat in back and forth rows.

Designer: Crochet with Carrie

Yarn: Stylecraft Special Aran with Wool (Aran Weight #4)

Cuff to Cuff Cardigan

There’s top down and bottom up sweaters. There’s sweaters that are worked flat and sweaters that are worked in the round. And then there are sweaters that are worked from side to side! This interesting construction method yields slimming vertical stripes and smooth color transitions. The pattern calls for half double crochet and single crochet in the back loops.

Designer: Yarnspirations

Exaggerate the different lengths of your front and back hems for an on trend look that’s sure to garner some compliments. The extra length in the back is also so nice for wearing with leggings!
