Design Story and Inspiration for this Easter Egg Knitting Pattern

I love quick and easy projects and I was looking for some fun makes for Easter – that are totally last minute! So I whipped up this pattern in about 30 minutes and I love it!

I created a video showing you each type of stitch used (except the basic knit stitch and purl stitch) and the video also shows how to finish it once you’ve knit the basic shape.

Yarn Options for This Free Easter Knitting Pattern

You can make these in any weight yarn you like! The one you see in the photos is knit in bulky/chunky weight yarn (category #5) and knit on size 8 (5.00mm) needles.

If you want to make this in a different weight yarn, just check the yarn label for the yarn you want to use and find the recommended needle size for the yarn. Then, go down two sizes.

For mine, the yarn recommended a US size 10 (6.00mm) needle, so I went down to an 8 (5.00mm) to ensure tighter stitches that wouldn’t show the stuffing. Do the same for any weight yarn.

How to Customize Your Eggs for Decoration or an Easter Egg Hunt!

These eggs are super easy to customize. We already discussed how to change it to fingering weight yarn, super bulky or even worsted weight yarn by using our yarn label and changing the needle size.

Change up the colors, too! Want stripes? No problem, just change colors every 2 or 3 rows. How about a fun knit chocolate egg? Just find a yummy shade of brown and you’re good to go! You can use any color combination you like with this free pattern. You could even work a fun fair isle design on these knitted Easter eggs.

Want an Easter egg cozy instead of a stuffed egg? Leave the bottom portion open and thread some yarn in the bottom stitches so you can gather it closed.

Knitted Egg Pattern Details

This pattern is written for straight needles and seamed since this process is easier for beginners. Refer to the video for help with the increase (kfb), decrease (k2tog) and how to finish the egg once you have knit it.

Want to work this pattern in the round on double pointed needles? Just cast on the 8 sts on a double pointed needle, then divide as evenly as you can among 3 or 4 needles and join. The only change to the pattern is to knit the purl rows.
