These bulky mittens whip up in no time – great for gifting! Full video tutorial, too!

Design Story and Inspiration for these Easy Crochet Mittens

I absolute LOVE making mittens! I realized that I didn’t have a quick top-down crochet mitten (I do have another fast pair to create, these Super Bulky Mittens) so I decided to design this pair! I used the waistcoat stitch to give them more of a knit look and I love the way they turned out!

I designed this pattern as part of the 2024 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:

1. Uses stash yarn

2. Is easy to intermediate

3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)

4. Is well received by gift recipients

This fits the bill for these criteria, and I love how functional and cute they are.

Yarn Options for Bulky Crochet Mittens

As you can guess from the name of this pattern, I used bulky (category #5) yarn for this pattern. The yarn used in the sample is Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me which made a seriously comfy pair of mittens.

Feel free to use up any bulky yarn in your stash that gets the same gauge – these work up SO fast you can make several pair before Christmas!

Crochet Mitten Pattern Details

This pattern is worked from the top down beginning with the magic ring. The first round is simple single crochet, and the body of the mitten is the waistcoat stitch, which is a variation of single crochet (the difference is where you place your hook).

Don’t worry – there is a full video tutorial below where I make the second mitten with you, showing you how to work the magic ring, waistcoat stitch, ribbing and the thumb. You can do this!
