Free Crochet Pattern - Buttercup Penguin Pal

I’ve been trying to make a stuffed penguin for a long time now!  If you’ve been following the blog you know that my Puppy Love Puffball was originally intended to be a penguin, but turned out to be a dog!  I don’t know why this has been such a hard project for me but I finally made one I love.

This was my first time working with Red Heart Buttercup yarn and I loved it!  I am going to make more stuffed animals with this yarn for sure.  This yarn and Bernat Pipsqueak have become my two favorites for stuffed animals.  My favorite things about these yarns are the soft, squishiness (is that a word??) and how well the yarns hide the crochet stitches.  When people see the animals I’ve made with these yarns they have a hard time believing they are crocheted – but they are!

The only downside to this is that it can be hard to see your stitches while you are working!  Stitch markers are a huge help with this so at the very least use a bobby pin to mark the first stitch of each round (that’s what I usually use anyway).

I’m SO sad that this is crochet! LOL Sooo cute. I’m a hands-on learner with this sort of thing, and really need someone sitting beside me to teach me, and don’t have that — sooo will have to look somewhere for a knitting pattern – OR………… somehow, some way, learn to put stitches together with a hook. Sounds like a plan, right? I can do most stitches, just haven’t managed to combine them to MAKE anything. And there’s a thing called “slip stitch” which I PERFECTLY understand in knitting, but the only answer I can get in crochet is “that’s how you change direction or go around corners”. Hmmm – I GET that – but what IS it? LOL Again – this is just soooo cute! Saving the pattern for that future date when MAYBE I can learn to do this. Nope – videos don’t work for me. I end up throwing hook AND yarn across the room cuz stitch counts don’t end up the same.

What brand name crochet hook do you use when making your projects?

To be honest I use any hook that’s nearby as long as it’s the right size! I’m not very picky about hooks. I do love my Clover Amour and Soft Touch hooks, but if I see a different hook in the right size in my stash I use it.
