What do you make when you are down to the last minute? One thing I love to make is mittens – but when I’m down to the wire, I reach for this super easy pattern for fingerless gloves.

Design Story and Inspiration for the Easy Crochet Fingerless Gloves

I created this pattern as part of the Holiday Maker’s Challenge, an 8-week gifting marathon where we all work together to crochet as many gifts as possible for friends and family.

I wanted a pattern easy enough that a beginner could make them, but that would also be well-received as a gift and that could work up in a day!

These work up super fast. I actually made the second one for the video in just an hour! Be sure to check out the video tutorial if you need any help.

About the Yarn

I really love the Red Heart Colorscape yarn! I’ve used it for several projects and it works up well and the color changes are gorgeous.

You can see the color changes in these mitts and I didn’t have to do any color changes or weave in extra ends!

This is a worsted weight yarn that can be substituted for any worsted yarn you have in your stash. Use up that stash for the Holiday Challenge, then you have an excuse to go buy more yarn. 😀

Pattern Details

These crochet fingerless gloves are totally done in half double crochet, so you only have to know and use one simple stitch for the whole project.

After the ribbing, the body of the mitt is 14 simple rounds, and there is a video to help you every step of the way.

Dumb me – why do people wear fingerless gloves/mittens? What is their attraction?

People usually wear them so they can still do things like be on their phone or take pictures with a nice camera and still have the rest of their hands be decently warm. 🙂

The theory is that as the blood warms passing through the wrist and hand, that the fingers eventually heat up too. I love my fingerless gloves, very handy (no pun intended!!) I just find gloves cumbersome.

I like this pattern and I would like to make them for young girls how would I make them smaller?

    • amanda

      December 18, 2020 at 1:32 am

Hi! How much smaller are we talking? You could try going down a hook size, but you would definitely need to try them on the girls to make sure the length was right, as it will need to be shorter as well as smaller around.

I have friends that are horse trainers/riders and this way the hands stay warm while still being able to feel the reins!! They love them. I have sold to others that work at the barn and then came in orders for beanies and scarves that match.

Yay!! So glad they love them. This was a fun pattern to work up 😀

I am currently trying to make these but with cotton. I am getting large gaps from the yarn not bouncing back as well as others. Do you have any recommendations? Use a smaller hook and adjust the stitches? Or should I just switch yarn?

I would switch yarn if it has large gaps, but see what gauge you are getting to know if you could go down a hook size before giving up on the yarn.
