Tips for Crocheting Toys
Crochet toys are usually always made in the round, so using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of the round is a good idea for a beginner (and even more advanced crocheters!) because it can be difficult to see where your round begins, especially when using single crochet.
Single crochet rounds usually are not joined with a slip stitch unless the pattern specifically calls for it, so you will be working continually in spirals. This is where that stitch marker comes in handy.
One technique you will need to master if you are working with any type of amigurumi (the style of crochet that is used for stuffed toys) is the magic ring, also called a magic circle. Check out the magic ring tutorial here to familiarize yourself with this simple trick. I’ve made it easy, I promise!
To ensure your stuffing doesn’t stick out through the stitches, it’s a good idea to place the stuffing inside the pantyhose. If my stitches are tight enough I don’t always do this, but sometimes it can help keep the stuffing in place. Sometimes I even use leftover yarn to stuff my toys!
The best eyes for crochet toys are either safety eyes or embroidered. If a small child or baby will be playing with the toy, it is best to always embroider the eyes with some string or leftover yarn. I’ve even had safety eyes come off after they were properly attached, so be safe if giving to a small child and never use buttons for eyes.
What are the best yarns for crochet toys?
Anything goes when it comes to amigurumi, but the best yarns are either cotton or acrylic. These are the ones that I prefer to use for my toys as they both are easy to care for and have even, tight stitches that don’t tend to let the stuffing show through.
As far as yarn weight goes, that depends upon the pattern. Most crochet toys I’ve seen use either dk (weight #3) or worsted (weight #4) yarn. These are both easy to work with as they aren’t too small. Larger yarns can be used for toys but they do tend to leave larger holes. You’ll notice that most yarns used in these patterns are dk or worsted.
