I love the look of this beanie. You can’t really tell, but the fun brickwork design is actually just the moss stitch (alternating single crochet and chain stitches). First you’ll work the top of the beanie in continuous rounds of single crochet, then you’ll do the moss stitch stitch section, and then you’ll finish with a simple single crochet edging.

Slouchy beanies should drape nicely and not feel stiff. Linked double crochet stitches are the answer! It is amazing to see the crochet work move like actual fabric. This stitch is also visually interesting but not too frilly or decorative – perfect for a men’s crochet hat.

Common Questions about Men’s Crochet Hat Patterns
First you will need a very guy-friendly yarn in a color that you know the recipient will wear (for me that means gray or black for my hubs). Next you will need your crochet hook in the hook size that is appropriate for your yarn and that gets the gauge of the great pattern you’ve decided to make (like one of these free crochet hat patterns!). Finally, you will need a yarn needle and scissors, and any other notions the pattern calls for, like button or a pom pom.
It’s the same techniques for any size hat. There are really three main ways to crochet a hat in adult sizes (or any size!). First, you can start top-down with the magic circle, second you can work bottom up beginning with the brim, or you can work a basic back loop beanie where you work in the back loops to form a ribbed rectangle and then seam it in the back and gather the top. Any of these methods can make a perfect men’s hat for cold weather.
You can make a wonderful hat with just basic stitches, so no matter your skill level there is a pattern in this list for you. Simple stitches often make the best hats anyways!
The best way is to measure the head of the recipient with a tape measure. This will give you an accurate circumference so you can choose the best hat size to make for the man in your life. A lot of times for an adult male that will be an adult large, around a 22″ circumference, but of course men’s heads are different sizes (my hubs would be swallowed up in an adult large!), so look for a pattern that comes in a variety of sizes.
