Whip up several of these easy small evergreen trees as ornaments or as gift toppers!

Design Story and Inspiration for this Mini Tree Pattern
Ever ence I learned that you could make a cute holiday tree out of a square, I have wanted to try turning a fun textured stitch pattern into a tree. So I decided to use the feather stitch to make my square, and it turned out to be an amazing little tree!
I designed this pattern as part of the 2024 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:
1. Uses stash yarn
2. Is easy to intermediate
3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)
4. Is well received by gift recipients
This fits the bill for these criteria, and I love how functional and cute they are.
Yarn Options for this Free Tiny Crochet Tree Pattern
You can really use any yarn you like for this pattern, but to get it the size shown you will need a DK weight yarn (category #3). The yarn I used is Yarn Bee Sugarwheel Cotton, which is a great cotton yarn from my local Hobby Lobby. It made a great tree!
Feel free to use any size yarn you like to make your tree, just be sure to adjust your hook size. If you aren’t sure what hook size to use, check the recommendation on the ball band.
Mini Holiday Tree Pattern Details
This pattern is just the same simple square as my Feather Stitch Face Scrubby, just turned into a tree! It’s really simple and you could use the finishing instructions to turn any square into a tree, not just this stitch.
It’s super simple and will have a full video tutorial very soon (how to turn the square into a tree is already done)!

Video Tutorial to Crochet the Square:
Border
Ch 1, sc evenly around, working (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner, join to first sc with slip st. Fasten off.
The sc border makes it easier to slip stitch the tree together.
Crochet Christmas Tree Finishing Video
Finishing
Turn the square so that one corner is on top (this will be the very top of the tree).
Join yarn in corner at top of tree and slip stitch the edges together.
Fold up the bottom corner until it meets where the edges were slip stitched together. Slip stitch across to close.
Trunk
Join brown yarn about 1/3 of the way across bottom. Ch 1, hdc 5 across bottom of tree, turn tree to back and hdc 5. Join to first hdc with sl st and sl st first 5 hdc to second 5 hdc.
Weave in ends.

If you’d like, sew or glue some ornaments on for a fun Christmas tree, like in the photo above.
