Design Story and Inspiration for the Christmas Tree Gift Bag Pattern
I designed this crochet bag as part of the 2023 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:
1. Uses stash yarn
2. Is easy to intermediate
3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)
4. Is well received by gift recipients
So I was thinking about the people like my husband who don’t wear any type of crocheted anything and what I could give someone like him.
Well, we all have to wrap presents right? What if, instead of disposable wrapping paper, we gave a gift in a homemade bag? This bag will hold a small gift and I wanted to give it a bit something extra so I decided to do a tapestry crochet pattern on it.
Yarn Options for this Small Gift Bag
I used worsted weight for my bag and this made it a nice size to hold a wide variety of gifts. If you’d like it larger or smaller I’d recommend changing the weight of your yarn and going with a different hook size (check the yarn label on your skein for a recommendation).
You can use any size yarn you like – it’s great for using up your stash and some leftover odds and ends! I chose three colors of Premier Just Yarn Worsted, which I picked up months ago at my local Dollar Tree.

Pattern Notes
When working chart, work each stitch into the back loop only.
To change colors, work last st of current color to last 2 loops, draw new color through last 2 loops.
Join each round with a slip stitch (sl st) and pull tightly to reduce join. Also pull ch 1 tightly for new round.
Work chart twice for each rnd to have a gift bag with the design on both sides, or work once and work the rest of the sts in main color to only have design on one side.
Main color (MC) is the color you want the background to be, then use a green and white or two shades of green for the tree.

Rnd 31: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, *ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next sc; repeat to last st, ch 1, skip last st, join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 32: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch-space around (56 sts).
Fasten off.
Finishing
To close bottom, flatten bag, then you can use a yarn needle to sew the seam shut or turn the bag inside out and use sl st to close the seam.
Weave in ends.
For tie, cut one long strand of yarn in each color of bag and thread the yarn through the ch-1 spaces of rnd 31. Trim off excess, pull tightly to close and tie.

There’s no mention of the seaming for the bag. There’s very little of the pattern at all.

Somehow the finishing instructions got cut off so I added them again and you should be able to see them now. The majority of the pattern is worked on the same number of stitches from the chart.

I subscribed and can find the chart for the snowflake bag but not for the Christmas Tree gift bag. Help!
Thank you!

Hi! That chart hasn’t made its way to the regular resource library yet because the Holiday Maker’s Challenge is going on. You can find the complete downloadable PDF (including the chart) for this pattern by signing up for the challenge before Dec. 25th.
