Design Story and Inspiration for the Floral Ganny Cowl Pattern
I so loved these little granny squares I used for the Unforgettable Tote that I really wanted to create a new project with them. I thought for a long time before settling on a cowl idea. I wanted something that didn’t take long (I have a couple of longer projects in the works and just needed something quick!) and I wanted a cozy cowl shape that was made from granny squares.
The square itself has a floral center with the iconic granny stitch making up the rest of the square. I love that it’s classic while being fresh at the same time.
It took quite a while for me to decide on a joining method for these squares and I finally fell in love with this cabled join – I like how the changing colors of the yarn really make the cables stand out. I’m definitely going to try this join again! The join uses the chain stitch, single crochet stitch and slip stich, so it’s an easy join even though it looks complicated. Don’t be afraid to give it a try!
I am working on a video tutorial for attaching these exact squares, but until I get it ready (it’s so hard to find quiet time to film with my 4 boys running around!) I found a video that shows the technique. I’ve included a link to it below.

Yarn Options for this Crocheted Granny Square Cowl Pattern
I chose two Red Heart yarns for this pattern – Red Heart Unforgettable, one of my favorite color-changing yarns, and Red Heart Soft, a wonderful acrylic. I wanted a solid color to offset the beautiful color changes in the Unforgettable yarn. It comes in many beautiful color combinations and I chose the Petunia (I’ve also used other colors for different designs – they are all SO pretty!).
I chose a grey color for the background color of this scarf, but the Unforgettable tote uses a cream color and I love them both. Honestly I can’t decide which one I like more! The color changing yarn provides the bright colors, and I love the color changes. It needed a bit of color to make it fun.
You can use any worsted weight yarn (category #4 on the Craft Yarn Council’s Standard Yarn Weight System) that gets gauge. If your gauge is slightly different, it doesn’t really matter for this project, as your cowl will just be slightly larger or smaller depending upon your gauge.
This is a fantastic stash-busting crochet project for using up worsted weight scrap yarn!!
How to Customize This Easy Crochet Cowl Pattern
It’s so easy to make a custom size cowl with squares because you can make as many or as few as you would like and then join them. This pattern would also be great in a lot of smaller squares joined together so you can make an infinity scarf that wraps around your neck a couple of times.
Add a couple more granny squares to make a looser cowl. You can also use the granny stitch pattern to add height to the cowl at the top and bottom of the cowl once you assemble it.
