Learn how to crochet the primrose stitch, a variation on the shell stitch, in this quick and easy tutorial. Perfect for scarves, blankets and more.

The crochet primrose stitch is a wonderful stitch pattern for beginners because it uses only basic crochet stitches. If you know how to single crochet, double crochet and half double crochet, then you can work this stitch.
Common Questions About the Primrose Stitch
Since this stitch uses only single, half double, and double crochet, you only need to know the basics to work it. You can move beyond just a plain stitch pattern into a more textured stitch.
This stitch can be made into almost anything, but it is especially great for a scarf or cowl (you can check out my Primrose Cowl free crochet pattern here), blanket, dishcloth, hat or bag.
You chain a multiple of 3 stitches plus 2 for this stitch pattern.
This is a simple 2 row repeat.

How to Crochet the Primrose Stitch
This stitch is a very easy two row repeat, so once you get the foundation laid with row one, you will repeat rows two and three as many times as desired.
Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms):
Chain (ch)
Single Crochet (sc)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Skill Level: Easy
You can work this stitch in any weight yarn with any crochet hook that is appropriate for the yarn weight.
I’ve chosen to use a super bulky yarn (Tuff Puff from We Crochet) and a large Clover Amour 10.00mm hook.
Crochet Tutorial
Chain a multiple of 3 sts plus 2. For this tutorial, I’ve chained 14 with my large yarn and hook. 12 is a multiple of 3 and then I added 2 more to the chain. You can work this in any multiple of 3 you like, then add 2 to the chain.
Row 1: (Sc, ch 2, sc) in 3rd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch; repeat from * to end, working hdc in last ch; turn.
Row 2 (Repeat row): Ch 3, *3 dc in next ch-2 space (shell st made); repeat from * to end, working double crochet stitch in top of turning ch; turn.
Row 3 (Repeat row): Ch 2, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in center dc of shell; repeat from * to end, working hdc in top of turning ch; turn.
Repeat rows 2-3 for pattern.
