Tips for Crocheting Hats

The circumference is the most important measurement when making a crochet hat or beanie. This number tells you how big around the hat is, and depends upon the size you are making.

So gauge becomes important when you are figuring how large the hat’s circumference will be. It’s important to work up a gauge swatch to make sure your hat will come out the size you are hoping for.

Also, keep the intended wearer in mind when making a hat. Think of the care it will need (kid’s and baby hats will need to be washed!), what type of fiber feels good against the skin (some people hate or are allergic to wool) and what color would look good on them (or you!) since it’s worn so close to the face.

Best Yarns for Crochet Hats

This really depends upon the intended use (summer hats need a lot different yarn than a winter beanie!) and the person who will be wearing it.

A lot of people make hats out of wool, and I have to admit I like to do that as well, but I don’t mind a bit of itching on the forehead if I wear it too long or hand washing it.

So a super wash wool works well for me and I’ve also used acrylic for my kids (so I can throw them in the wash!) and even cotton for a more spring time beanie (seen in the video above).

See our guide to the best yarn for hats here

Materials for Crochet Hats

You will only need basic materials to crochet a hat. You will need your yarn and a crochet hook appropriate for the size yarn used. You will also need a tapestry needle (also called a yarn needle) to weave in ends and seam (if your pattern calls for seaming) and some scissors to cut your yarn.

Some patterns will need stitch markers, a faux fur pom pom or yarn pom pom or a tag for the bottom of the hat. The tags have become very trendy over the last few years.

Okay, now on with the free crochet hat patterns!
