Looking for a crochet stitch that’s easy and has amazing texture? The crochet bean stitch is the one you’ve been looking for!
Common Questions about the Bean Stitch
The bean stitch (or even its cousin the mini bean stitch), is created by pulling up several loops in the same stitch and closing it off tightly with a chain stitch. It’s a beautiful stitch that gives lots of texture.
Both stitches are created similarly, the biggest difference is that there are usually more loops on the hook for a puff stitch, and a puff stitch can be worked to stand up straight, whereas the bean stitch pattern leans to one side. When worked in rows the stitches lean in opposite directions.
This stitch pattern is perfect for all types of projects. Try it for a cowl, beanie, crochet blanket or more. I’ve even used it for a crochet bag.

Crochet Bean Stitch Photo Tutorial
Yarn: Any weight yarn will work for this stitch. Here I’m using super bulky yarn and a large crochet hook, but you can work this stitch pattern with any weight.
Crochet Hook: Any hook that is appropriate for your yarn weight will work.
Here you will find instructions for the written pattern of the bean stitch tutorial with photos.
How to Crochet a Bean Stitch
Step One: Insert hook into stitch or chain indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop.
Step Two: Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch or chain and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
Step Three: Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch or chain and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
Step Four: Yarn over and draw through all 6 loops on hook.
Step Five: Chain one to close the stitch.
Swatch Tutorial
Chain an odd number of stitches. This stitch pattern is a multiple of 2 plus 1.
Row 1: Insert hook into 3rd chain from hook and [pull up a loop, (yarn over, insert hook in same stitch and pull up a loop) twice (6 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook], *ch 1, skip next chain and work [] for next bean st; repeat from * to end; turn.
Row 2: Ch 2, insert hook into first bean st, [pull up a loop, (yarn over, insert hook in same stitch and pull up a loop) twice (6 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on hook], *ch 1, skip ch-1 space and work [] into next bean st; repeat from * to end; turn.
Repeat row 2 for pattern. Be sure to check out the video tutorial if you have any problems making this stitch.
How to Work Bean Stitch in the Round
When I work this stitch in the round, I prefer to work it by joining and turning each round. When working it this way, you will have the same look as the swatch, where the row of bean stitches slant in opposite directions on every round.
When working bean stitch in the round, you will need to work into an even number of stitches, as you won’t need the turning chain.
When worked in continuous rounds, you get more of a diagonal look to your pattern, which can be beautiful and it really just depends on the look you are going for.

Variation on the Bean Stitch: Mini Bean Stitch (or Baby Bean Stitch)
This stitch is worked the same as the regular bean stitch, but you skip step three, so there are just four loops on the hook when you yarn over and draw through all the loops on the hook. This gives you a smaller bean.
Easy Crochet Patterns that Use the Bean Stitch or a Variation:
Simple Textured Wash Cloth
This free pattern uses a modified bean stitch to create a wonderful textured wash cloth (or dishcloth) that’s as easy to make as it is useful.
Quick and Easy Messy Bun Hat
This free crochet pattern features a single crochet brim that is joined with a slip stitch (sl st) and then worked in the round. This beanie uses the bean stitch for the texture and is as quick as it is easy. No need for a stitch marker as you turn at the end of every row. There is even a variation for a regular beanie that could even include a pom pom.
Elegant Ombre Baby Blanket
This crochet blanket pattern uses the bean stitch with ombre yarn for a gorgeous combo. This textured blanket uses the crochet mini bean stitch, but you could easily use a basic bean stitch for this pattern. It really depends on what look you are going for.
Textured Hygge Mittens
This pattern is an example of this stitch worked in the round. I joined and turned for this pattern to have the stitches slanted in opposite directions, but they have such wonderful texture with this Red Heart Hygge Yarn.
