Why Crochet a Coaster?
Have you made a set of coasters from any free crochet coaster patterns before? If you are used to crocheting things like blankets, hats and scarves you might be scratching your head. Why would you crochet a coaster?
I’ll tell you why you are going to love these free crochet coaster patterns! First of all, they are super quick. Secondly, they only use small amounts of yarn in different colors (yes, they’re totally doable with scrap yarn!). Thirdly, they are just so stinking cute! Plus, they’re totally functional and practical. The yarn soaks up the condensation from the glass and voila no water rings on your table! You might even love them more than traditional coasters made of glass or wood, because they are super easy to clean as long as the yarn you use is machine washable.
After you make a set or two for your coffee table (and maybe another set or two for the patio table), you will want to keep these free crochet coaster patterns handy for last-minute gifts. They make excellent housewarming gifts, birthday presents and just all around great gifts. And with so many great free crochet coaster patterns to choose from, it will be easy to find the perfect pattern for that special someone!
Tips for Crocheting Coasters
When crocheting a coaster, the biggest thing to pay attention to is how flat your coaster lies. The last thing you want is to crochet a set of coasters only to find that a cup or mug can’t sit properly on it. So even stitches are key.
Don’t worry if you aren’t the best at your crochet tension and find that your stitches sometimes end up uneven. The best way you can help this is to block your finished coasters. I like to use cotton yarn for mine, which blocks well and tends to lie pretty flat.
The best blocking method I’ve found for coasters is the damp blocking method. Pin your coaster to a flat surface (I have a quilter’s blocking board, but any flat surface you can pin into is fine). Then, use a spray bottle filled with water to apply a nice even layer of water to the piece. You don’t have to soak it, just ensure that it is wet.
Let dry on the blocking board and that’s it! It’s super easy and really helps the stitches to lie flat and look more professional. Give it a try!
How big should a crochet coaster be? Coasters should be between 3-5″ in diameter, so I typically will make mine about 4″ square (or round). This is large enough to accommodate the bottom of most drinking glasses.
What is the best crochet stitch for a coaster? There are many different stitches you can use for a coaster crochet pattern, but the best ones will lie flat, allowing your drink to sit evenly. Opt for tighter stitches such as single crochet for best results, although double crochet can also work.
Best Yarns for Crochet Coasters
By far the best fiber you can pick for a coaster is cotton. Cotton yarn (as mentioned above) blocks very well and tends to flatten out easily. Cotton also is very heat-resistant, so if you put a very hot mug on your coaster you don’t have to worry about it melting. It is also easy to clean and is absorbent. A cotton blend yarn works well, too.
If you prefer not to use a cotton yarn, you could also use wool since it is also heat-resistant. The last thing you want is for your coaster to melt! Wool is not as good an option as cotton because it can’t be cleaned as easily (it tends to felt) and it can get stretched out of shape more easily.
Your best bet is to stick with a good cotton yarn for a crochet coaster pattern. Some of these patterns use other fibers, just be careful if you are planning on using them for anything hot. Now, on to the patterns!
