Looking for a beginner-friendly baby beanie pattern? This easy crochet baby hat uses only single crochet!

Design Story and Inspiration for This Simple Baby Beanie
I love designing baby things, they are just so small and cute and can be made very quickly. I wanted to add a baby hat pattern to the site and wanted something easy that also had a bit different texture.
I worked up a baby hat in a similar manner to this using half double crochet, but there was an obvious join the back, which didn’t thrill me, so I decided to try it using single crochet worked in continuous rounds – and I love how it turned out!
This hat is completely constructed in single crochet – the difference is only in where you place your hook!
Yarn Options for This Basic Crochet Baby Hat
For this pattern, I used Lion Brand Yarn Feels Like Butta, which I’ve used several times to make other baby items such as blankets and sweaters. It’s a wonderfully soft yarn that comes in beautiful colors (you saw it recently in the Sawtooth Star Baby Blanket!).
You can use any worsted weight yarn (category #4) that gets gauge. These little hats don’t use up a lot of yarn, so bust that stash! In fact, my skein with 218 yards has made a newborn and a preemie size so far and there is still plenty of yarn left.
Pattern Details for the Basic Crochet Baby Beanie
This pattern is worked from the top down starting with the magic ring. You work in regular single crochet (under both loops) for all the crown shaping, then we switch to a front loop only, back loop only pattern for the body of the hat.
This stitch pattern gives wonderful texture to the hat and a bit different look than just standard single crochet – and all we are doing is changing where we place the hook! I love that about crochet. 😀
Finally, the ribbing is worked back and forth and rows and attached as you go. Don’t worry, there is a full video tutorial of the preemie size to walk you through it all!
You will find the video in the middle of the pattern, so keep scrolling if you are looking for the video tutorial.
