Remember when you first learned to crochet? Or maybe you are new and getting ready to learn. This simple beginner crochet baby blanket is an easy free pattern that is great for when you are binge watching Netflix or riding in the car.
Design Story and Inspiration for the Beginner Crochet Baby Blanket
I was a knitter for about four years before I learned to crochet. It was really hard for me because I was used to the stitches all being on the needle, so I didn’t really understand what a crochet stitch was. The few times I tried it I ended up with a triangle!
Then I got hired as an elementary art teacher and the other art teacher next door was a crocheter who was looking to knit so we taught each other.
The first thing I ever crocheted was a sheep with bobbles!! I have no idea why it clicked when she showed me but it’s been amazing and I actually crochet way more than I knit now, although I still design both.
I created this blanket with the beginner in mind. The video tutorial shows everything a beginner would need to know, from how to hold the yarn and tie a slip knot to how to weave in the ends when you are done.
Yarn Options for Crochet Baby Blankets
This easy crochet baby blanket pattern uses the Bernat Blanket yarn, so it works up very quickly with a large hook and it’s super warm. I loved having it draped over my lap while I was working on it! I’ve made a large blanket with this yarn and it’s amazing.
A lot of people have this yarn in their stash, so if you have two colors of this yarn you can make this blanket. Of course, if you don’t want a color change, you can easily make this easy pattern in a solid color, or even in a combination of colors if you prefer!
If you don’t have this particular yarn but are looking to see if you have something that will substitute in your stash, any super bulky yarn should work for this pattern (weight #6). You can also try holding two or three strands of worsted weight yarn together or chain more than the pattern calls for with chunky yarn. Any type of yarn you love that gets a similar gauge should turn out around the same baby blanket size.

How to Customize This Easy Baby Blanket Pattern
Since this simple baby blanket pattern uses only single crochet it’s super easy to customize. You can make your starting chain any length you’d like – so make it different sizes! Make a smaller car seat blanket, or turn it into the perfect baby blanket for a crib. This makes a perfect baby shower gift using only chain stitches and single crochet stitches, so it’s a super easy stitch pattern even for first time crocheters.
You can keep the stripe pattern the same as mine (6 rows), change it up by switching at the end of each row, use many skeins of yarn in all kinds of colors, or even make it in a single color. One of the best things about making your own baby blanket is that it’s entirely up to you!
