The weather is definitely changing here in the South and it’s cold! It does feel a bit more like the holidays with this weather, which is good, but it’s gotten me to bring out all the hats, mittens and headbands, and I decided to create this Mock Cable Crochet Headband to add to my winter accessories.

Design Story and Inspiration for this Easy Pattern
I designed this pattern for this year’s Holiday Maker’s Challenge, an annual event where we all work together to get as many handmade items finished as possible before Christmas.
Things in the challenge are quick to make, don’t require advanced skills, and are great for gift-giving!
The challenge starts each year in October, so be on the lookout for the next one!
Yarn Options for This Crochet Headband Pattern
You will need a super bulky (category #6) yarn for this pattern because it needs to have very few stitches per inch. The entire headband is only 8 sts wide, making it work up super quickly!
Use up any super bulky yarn from your stash that gets gauge, although honestly even if your gauge is a bit off you can still use it – gauge only affects the width of the headband. Then you just work until it’s as long as the circumference you desire.

Notes
This headband is worked flat and seamed, so it’s easy to customize to a variety of sizes.
The “cable” is actually made with surface slip stitch, making this a truly easy pattern!
It is 3.5″ wide with super bulky yarn, but can be made narrower with worsted or bulky yarn and then crochet to the desired circumference before seaming.

Mock Cables
Join yarn to foundation row at ch-1 space. Use surface slip st to work in the ch-1 of each row, crossing over where there are ch-2 spaces to give the appearance of cables. Fasten off at end and rejoin at foundation row to create second row of “cable” stitch.
Finishing
Seam foundation row to last row. Weave in ends.
