I love beanies. Like, seriously. I have to keep myself from making a hundred different beanie designs and not making anything else.
If you’ve been around here a while, you know that I love variety and I make a ton of different types of patterns. But that doesn’t change my love of a good crochet hat, so here’s one that I couldn’t resist designing.
Design Story and Inspiration for this Crochet Hat Pattern
You all loved the Diamond Stitch Crochet Blanket so much that I just had to do another design with this stitch – so a hat it was!
This beanie pattern worked up so quickly that I made it between one evening while we watched Netflix and the next morning so I could wear it out that afternoon.
I love the diamond crochet stitch and I’ve seen so many different ways to make it – some of which were super complicated. I have a huge stitch dictionary that I love and found something similar, so I adjusted a bit and now this stitch is easy for me!
About the Yarn
I used Lion Brand Scarfie again for this pattern (just like my blanket!) because I just love the color changes in it.
It’s also so super warm and lofty, and since it’s a chunky (weight #5) yarn, it’s a super fast project.
If you’d like to substitute, any bulky yarn that gets gauge will work – I’ve found that a great substitute is Lion Brand Color Made Easy.

Crochet Beanie Pattern Details
This beanie hat uses front post treble crochet to create the textured diamond effect. There are no cables or working in front or behind other stitches, so it’s not as hard as it looks!
The crochet beanie hat is worked from the bottom up with a front and back post double crochet brim, then the stitch pattern is worked to the crown, where the shaping takes place.
This hat looks just as good with or without a pom pom, so the choice is totally up to you if you want to add one. I love the way a faux fur pom pom looks, but prefer to wear hats without them, so I didn’t put one on this hat since it was for me. 🙂
Diamond Stitch Crochet Beanie
What You’ll Need
Yarn: Lion Brand Scarfie (bulky #5), 1 skein Pink/Silver
Crochet Hook: US Sizes K (6.50mm) and L (8.00mm)
Notions: Yarn needle (tapestry needle), scissors, pom pom (optional)
Gauge: 13 sts and 10 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in stitch pattern
Finished Size: Approximately 20″ circumference
Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations:
Chain (ch)
Single Crochet (sc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)
Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc)
Front Post Treble (fptr) – yo twice, insert hook in stitch indicated, yo, draw loop through, (yo, draw through 2 loops) three times
Front Post Treble 2 Together (fptr2tog) – *yo twice, insert hook in stitch indicated, yo, draw loop through, (yo, draw through 2 loops) twice, (two loops left on hook); repeat from * with three loops left on hook, draw through three loops.
Free Crochet Hat Pattern Notes
Chain 3 at beginning of round counts as a double crochet stitch.
Join each round with a slip stitch (sl st) in the first stitch of the round.
Use a stitch marker if you have trouble distinguishing the first stitch of the round.
Diamond Stitch Crochet Hat Pattern
Ribbing
With smaller hook, ch 64. Join with slip st to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, dc in each ch – (64 sts).
Round 2: Ch 3, *fpdc, bpdc; repeat from * around to last st, fpdc.
Rounds 3-4: Repeat round 2.
Body
Change to larger hook.
Round 1: Ch 3, dc in each st.
Round 2: Ch 1, fptr in first bpdc 2 rows below, *sc 3, fptrtog same bpdc and two bpdc to the left (3 sts in between two bpdc), skip sc behind treble; repeat from * to last 3 sts, sc 3, fptr in last leg of fpt2tog.
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in each st.
Round 4: Ch 1, sc 2, *fptr2tog in last fptr (make sure you work around both fptr at the beginning and end of round 2) and next fptr2tog, skip sc behind treble, sc 3; repeat from * to last st, sc.
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in each st.
Round 6: Ch 1, *fptr2tog in last fptr2tog 2 rows below and first fptr2tog 2 rows below, skip sc behind treble, sc 3; repeat from * around.
Round 7: Ch 3, dc in each st.
Round 8: Repeat round 4.
Round 9 (Dec Rnd): Ch 3, dc, dc2tog, *2 dc, dc2tog; repeat from * to end – (48 sts).
Round 10: Ch 1, *fptr2tog last fptr2tog 2 rows below and first fptr2tog 2 rows below, skip sc behind treble, sc 2; repeat from * to last 3 sts, fptr2tog, sc in last st.
Round 11 (Dec rnd): Ch 3, dc2tog, *dc, dc2tog; repeat to end – (32 sts).
Round 12: Ch 1, *fptr2tog last fptr2tog 2 rows below and first fptr2tog 2 rows below, skip sc behind treble, sc; repeat from * to end.
Round 13 (Dec rnd): Ch 3 (does not count as dc here), *dc2tog; repeat from * to end – (16 sts).
Round 14: Ch 1 *fptr2tog last fptr2tog 2 rows below and fist fptr2tog 2 rows below, slip st in sc behind treble; repeat from * around.
Round 15 (Dec Rnd): (Work ONLY into fptr2tog sts here, not into sl st) Ch 1, *2 sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around – (12 sts).
Round 16 (Dec Rnd): Ch 1, *sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around – (8 sts).
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through last loop and weave through remaining 8 sts, drawing tightly to close.
Crochet Pattern Finishing
Weave in ends.
Attach pom pom, if desired.

This beanie is beautiful! Is there any chance you will be doing a video for this beanie? I got through the ribbing but the directions for the body are somewhat difficult to follow without some visuals. I watched your Diamond Stitch Blanket video but it doesn’t seem to start out the same. Thanks!

Hi! I’m relatively new to crochet and have been making lots of practice swatches of the diamond stitch blanket – getting ready to dive in soon! I saw this beanie with the same stitch and want to give it a try for my 7 yo nephew. Any suggestions for making it a slightly smaller size?
Hi Jan! You would need to reduce the number of stitches. Any multiple of 4 should work. 🙂 I’m planning on working up a child size but I haven’t gotten to it yet. Try working the instructions on 56 or 60 sts instead of 64 and the rest of the pattern should be the same.
