Design Story and Inspiration for these Crocheted Face Scrubbies

As part of the 2021 Holiday Maker’s Challenge I designed a knit face scrubby, which was the first time I had ever designed anything like this. I wasn’t really big on using anything like this but decided to give them a try.

Wow, oh wow, am I hooked now! They work SO well! And if you make them with cotton yarn you can throw them in the washer and dryer and they turn out perfectly, again and again.

I wanted to design a cotton face scrubby that would be as beautiful as it is functional, so I went with these two color ones and I really love how they turned out!

Yarn Options for Facial Scrubbies

Cotton yarn is the best for these, as it mimics a cotton ball or cotton pad. These crochet scrubbies can be made in one color or two as shown – both are beautiful.

I haven’t tried any other type of fiber for crochet face scrubbies, so I can’t be sure if acrylic yarn or another fiber would work well, but hopefully you have some cotton in your stash that would work. Cotton is absorbant, feels good against the skin and holds up well to repeated washings (trust me, I’ve tried it).

This is a DK weight yarn (category #3), but you can always use worsted weight for a slightly larger scrubby (you will have to adjust the size of your hook).

If you don’t have yarn in your stash and need some, check out my guide to the best cotton yarn.

Perfect for Stash Busting and Gifts

As I’m writing this, Mother’s Day is coming up soon. These little beauties would make a perfect gift! When most people give scrubbies they tie a little stack together with a pretty ribbon.

You could use them as part of a spa basket, with special soap, or just as is. They make super quick, stash busting gifts, and with as pretty as these are you’ll love both making and giving them.

Face Scrubbie Pattern Details

The pattern as written uses two colors and you do not break the yarn in between rounds – giving you four ends to weave in at the end of your project.

Make sure you weave in those ends well (I show how I like to do mine in the video) so that you don’t have any loose ends after the wash, especially if you are giving these as gifts.

This pattern uses the popcorn stitch, which is a variation of a three double crochet cluster or puff stitch. I show how to complete this stitch in the video tutorial.
