Design Story and Inspiration for the Easy Knit Gift Card Holder

I designed this as part of the annual Holiday Maker’s Challenge, an event where we all work together to create as many gifts as possible before Christmas. It includes a free calendar, gift-giving guide and a new FREE downloadable pattern every week for 8 weeks!

All the patterns in the challenge are designed to:

  1. Use up stash yarn.
  2. Work up quickly.
  3. Be well-received by recipients.

Yarn Options for a Knitted Gift Card Holder

I designed this gift card holder using worsted weight yarn (category #4). The yarn I used is Berroco Comfort, a premium acrylic yarn with lots of squish. (One of my favorites!)

You can substitute any worsted weight yarn that gets gauge. The fiber content doesn’t really matter as it will not be worn.

Knit Gift Card Pattern Details

The stitch pattern for this project is very easy. Don’t be fooled by the texture – you don’t need to know more than the basic knit and purl stitches. The texture is provided by slipping stitches purlwise (like you are going to purl the stitch).

This easy project is knit in one piece and folded in half. Then, there are a couple of options for securing the sides:

  1. Stitch up the sides using a yarn needle.
  2. Use a crochet hook and slip stitch or single crochet the sides closed.

Yes this could be modified to work in the round. The stitch pattern is worked over an even number.
